The Class of 2016 reports tomorrow (Saturday), and from all accounts, it will be one of the largest classes in our illustrious history. Upperclassmen report on Aug. 19 while the first day of classes is the 22nd.
Here in Athletics, football, volleyball and soccer practices are already underway with their seasons opening later this month.
We congratulate Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia for making the preseason All-Southern Conference soccer team. Additionally, we offer a tip of our cap to Gettys Glaze ’92 and Tom Hatley ’81 for being included in the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012 as they are enshrined tonight at Riley Park.
As you’ve come to expect, we have another solid issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

Beginning at 1:15 pm, fans will be able to enjoy a brief scrimmage while enjoying complimentary grilled hamburgers and hot dogs (thanks to Gil Pohl ’76). A special treat this year will be free watermelon slices.
As a bonus, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free Coke Zero car flag.
The players will be on hand to sign autographs in McAlister Field House around 3 pm, where posters, schedule cards and other collateral will be available.
An expanded fireworks display will light up the night-time sky over historic Johnson Hagood Stadium after the Sept. 1 football home opener against Charleston Southern. Provided by Kirkman Broadcasting and their family of stations and sponsors, the pyrotechnical presentation by Zambelli Fireworks will begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the game, giving fans ample time to return to their respective tailgate areas and enjoy the show.
Juniors Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia were named to the 2012 women's soccer preseason all-conference team by the coaches of the Southern Conference. The Citadel, along with Furman and Samford, are the only teams to place more than one athlete on the squad.
Garcia, who was also named to the 2011 preseason all-conference team, closed the 2011 campaign with seven goals, four assists, 18 points and 71 shots. Entering just her third season, the Bogota, Colombia, native currently holds the school record in game-winners with nine and sits fourth all-time in goals with 17, fourth in points with 39 and fifth in shots with 124.
Aponte is coming off an historic sophomore season when she earned first team all-conference honors. She led the league in shots with 83 -- a Citadel record -- and led the team in goals with eight and points with 19. The Orlando, Fla., native is on pace to smash the program's shots record, sitting just 30 shy of the mark.
The Bulldogs were ranked ninth in the preseason coaches' poll receiving 44 points. Samford was selected by the Southern Conference's women's soccer head coaches to repeat as league champion in 2012.

Citadel graduates Gettys Glaze ’92 and Tom Hatley ‘81, along with native Charlestonian John Rhodes, have been voted by local fans as members of the Class of 2012 for the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame.
Formal induction into the Hall of Fame will take place on the field of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Friday (tonight) prior to the Charleston RiverDogs – Hagerstown Suns game that begins at 7:05 p.m.
Glaze was a standout on The Citadel’s 1990 College World Series team and was one of the few players ever to pitch and catch in the same game of the CWS. He was a 15th round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1992 and was inducted in 2007 as a member of The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame. He joins his older brother, Lee (Class of 1986), in the Hall and become the first-ever siblings inducted.
The longtime (24 years) James Island High baseball coach, Hatley led the Trojans to AAA state titles in 1994 and 1996, the lower state title in ’99 and nine region championships. A former assistant to Citadel coach and Charleston Baseball Hall of Famer Chal Port (1981-83, 89-91), Hatley continues to coach at James Island Charter High where he has collected 453 wins in his career. He was the overall state coach of the year in 1996 and ’99, and was the Class AAAA coach of the year twice and twice the Class AAA coach of the year. Hatley is also a past president of SC High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Those from The Citadel that have already been enshrined include Coach Chal Port (2006), Anthony Jenkins and the 1990 Team (2007), Richard Wieters (2008), Donald Morillo and Doug Pounder (2009), and Lee Glaze and Coach Fred Jordan (2010).
An environmentally-controlled luxury suite at Johnson Hagood Stadium is available in time for the season. If you have an interest, please contact Senior Associate Athletics Director John McAleer ’72 at 843/953-1354 or email him at john.mcaleer@citadel.edu.
The Scholastic Shooting Trust Fund will give three dollars to The Citadel rifle team for every dollar donated until Dec. 31, 2012.
The money raised will go to the rifle team in a form of a grant that can be used to fund travel, uniforms, ammunition, entry fees, scholarships and range fees, among other program needs. Grant funds may not be used to purchase firearms.
The Bulldogs have already accumulated more than $52,000 for their Scholastic Shooting Trust Fund. To donate or track the rifle teams donations please visit the link below:
