First Pitch!
Approximately 450 members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets will march across the McAlister Field House stage on Saturday morning and secure their prized diploma, eventually turn their rings around and then toss their white garrison caps skyward. All of this and more are part of the 2012 Commencement Exercises that commences at 9 am.
Football/track athlete Kevin Hardy recently signed a free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints, and we wish him well as he seeks employment with the National Football League.
Soccer and volleyball performed some community service activities prior to the Corps leaving for the summer, and baseball is our only sport still in season. The Bulldogs play at Davidson on Friday and a double-header on Sunday, while both schools have graduation on Saturday.
We ask that you review the list below of Area Citadel Club meetings and encourage you to participate in the one(s) closest to you. Several of our coaches and administrators, along with Citadel Brigadier Foundation representatives, will be at these events and they are usually grand times to renew old acquaintances and visit with our folks from McAlister Field House and Seignious Hall.

Hall of Famer Harvey Schiller to Serve as Commencement Speaker for Corps of Cadets
Sports marketing leader Harvey Schiller and The InterTech Group President Jonathan Zucker will deliver commencement addresses to the Class of 2012 at The Citadel on Saturday.
Schiller, Citadel Class of 1960, will deliver
the commencement speech to the South Carolina Corps of Cadets,
while Zucker, graduate college Class of 2006, will speak to the
graduating class in The Citadel Graduate College.
Commencement exercises will be held on Saturday, May 5 at 9
am for the Corps of Cadets and at 4 pm for the Graduate
College.
Since graduating from The Citadel in 1960, Schiller has gone from
flying over the skies of Vietnam to being named one of Sporting
News’ “100 Most Powerful People in Sports.”
As an Air Force combat pilot from 1962-86, Schiller earned
numerous commendations including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished
Flying Cross, Air Medals and the Meritorious Service Medal among
others. With more than 5,000 flying hours, Schiller rose to
achieve the rank of brigadier general.
In 1984, Schiller served as the Los Angeles Olympic Games boxing
competition director. Later as the executive
director/secretary general of the United States Olympic Committee
from 1990-94, Schiller was a key figure in helping the organization
to improve its financial health as well as land the Atlanta and
Salt Lake City games. Schiller has also been a commissioner
of the Southeastern Conference, CEO of YankeeNets, past president
of the International Baseball Federation, and vice-president of
programming at Turner Sports Inc. He was enshrined in The
Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Zucker, a 2006 graduate MBA graduate of The
Citadel, is a distinguished business and community leader. As
president of The InterTech Group, he has helped lead the North
Charleston-based business to become the 110th largest privately
held company in the country. He is also president of Z-Man
Fishing Products Inc., a Ladson based manufacturer of fishing
merchandise with more “peg” space in retailers such as
Wal-Mart and Bass Pro Shops over a one year period than any other
company.
Kevin Hardy Inks Free Agent Deal with New Orleans Saints
Former wide receiver and kick return specialist Kevin Hardy has inked a free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints.
Hardy played four seasons for the Bulldogs and saw action in 40 games, including all 33 the past three years. As a senior last fall, the Ocala, Fla., native ranked sixth in the Southern Conference with an average of 24.4 yards per kickoff return while also making four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown and rushing six times for 101 yards. His 716 all-purpose yards were the second most on the team.
As a sophomore in 2009, Hardy caught 14 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while also averaging 21.7 per kickoff return.
He also starred on The Citadel track and field
team, winning the SoCon indoor and outdoor long jump titles in 2009
and repeating as the indoor champion in 2010. At the
conference outdoor meet in April 2010, he came less than an inch
from claiming a fourth league crown in the event.
Baseball Takes Georgia Southern Series; Splits Two Games with North Florida
Bo Thompson collected a pair of base hits and drove in three runs as The Citadel defeated North Florida, 5-1, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Riley Park. Thompson posted RBI base hits in both the third and fifth innings to lead the Bulldogs' offense. Calvin Orth matched a career-high with three hits as The Citadel out-hit the Ospreys, 12-6. Logan Cribb picked up the win to even his record at 2-2 on the season, tossing two frames of no-hit ball in relief.
On Tuesday night at Riley Park, Andrew Karmeris' three-run home run in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as North Florida handed The Citadel a 6-3 defeat. Starting pitcher Tommy Organ struck out nine over 5.2 innings for the win, as the southpaw allowed one run on four hits and walked none. Brett Tompkins suffered the loss for The Citadel as he surrendered six runs on six hits in five innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Grant Richards and Mason Davis each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Joe Jackson collected three hits and The Citadel took advantage of four costly Georgia Southern errors to defeat the Eagles, 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Riley Park to take the Southern Conference series two games to one. Jackson's three-hit outing was his 15th multi-hit game of the season and his two RBI effort led the Bulldogs as well. Hughston Armstrong also collected two base hits for The Citadel, which was out-hit 15-9 in the game. James Reeves picked up his team-best sixth win in relief, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work while Ryan Hines collected his fifth save as he surrendered one run on two hits in two frames.
Georgia Southern starter Justin Hess struck out seven over six innings as the Eagles dealt The Citadel a 5-2 defeat on Saturday night at Riley Park. Kevin Connell suffered the loss as he allowed two runs – one earned – on seven hits in four innings. Drew DeKerlegand collected two hits to lead the offense.
On Friday Austin Pritcher allowed one unearned run and struck out four over seven innings as The Citadel used three Georgia Southern errors to score four unearned runs and defeated the Eagles, 4-1. Pritcher scattered six hits over the seven frames and walked one to improve to 5-3 on the season. Ryan Hines induced the final two fly outs of the game to earn his fourth save, and Justin Mackert led the offense with two base hits, his 13th multi-hit effort of the year.
The Bulldogs opened with a single run in the bottom of the second, but Georgia Southern quickly knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Jackson reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Thompson. Jackson then scored on a RBI fielder's choice by DeKerlegand for the opening run of the game.

Justin Mackert Is Presented with Two Citations during Annual Awards Convocation
On Thursday afternoon in McAlister Field House, The Citadel held its annual Awards Convocation and several cadet-student-athletes were recognized:
- Shanna Couch (Soccer): Received the School of Science and Mathematics Outstanding Student Award (presented annually in recognition of superior academic achievement by an undergraduate student majoring in one of the school’s disciplines);
- Angela Foyt (Soccer): The battalion and company athletic officers select a male and female cadet who has shown outstanding performance in intramural competition. The criteria include athleticism, sportsmanship and spirit of competition);
- Justin Mackert (Baseball): Received the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States President’s Award (presented annually to a graduating member of the Corps of Cadets who exemplifies the finest traditions of The Citadel and best represents the end result of its mission);
- Justin Mackert (Baseball): Received The Citadel Brigadier Foundation’ annual President’s Award (presented annually to the senior athlete who has brought credit to him or herself and The Citadel as a member of an athletic team. The award was presented by Danny Quirk ’80);
- Julia McCullohs (Rifle): Received the Maj. William Marks Hutson Award (presented annually to the rising first class cadet who portrays outstanding leadership ability, academic standing, and devotion to duty);

Track & Field Conclude Season at Penn Relays
The track and field teams competed in the Penn Relays over the weekend on historical Franklin Field in Philadelphia as they sent competitors for the shot put and javelin. The prestigious meet, in its 118th occurrence, is one of the world's largest and oldest relay carnivals.
Senior Quintin Turner threw the shot put 45'9.75" to take 21st place while Clay Allen heaved the javelin 190'8" to nab 16th place. Both athletes failed to qualify for the finals yet closed out successful seasons.
In just his second season, Allen has quickly climbed the ranks of The Citadel's record books in the javelin, recording marks over 200-feet in almost every competition. The Duncan, native currently sits second all-time in the javelin with a mark of 204'6" and most recently recorded an all-conference toss of 201'2" at the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In his final season, Turner has experienced huge success in each meet of the outdoor and indoor slate. The Mt. Pleasant native took second place in the shot put at the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships and scored in all three of his events (discus, hammer and shot put).
Turner is in the top 10 all-time in every event in which he competes. He is second all-time in the 35-pound weight throw and hammer, third in the discus and seventh in the indoor and outdoor shot put.

Soccer Takes Part in “Keep Charleston Beautiful” Program
The Bulldogs utilized the soccer pitch to
"pitch in" and cleaned up trash at Hampton Park as part of "Keep
Charleston Beautiful." The program is designed to promote the
cleanliness and beautification of the City of Charleston through
education, public awareness and community involvement.
The "Keep Charleston Beautiful" program, coordinated by the city, is a committed group of community leaders appointed by Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. (Citadel Class of 1964) to take the lead in keeping the City of Charleston clean and beautiful.
Volleyball Impacts Local Youth
In the weeks prior to their final exams, members of the volleyball team visited with Charleston-area youth at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School as well as those at MUSC's Child Life Department.
In early April, Coach Amir Khaledi and his team spent more than two hours reading to the fifth grade class at Ashley River.
More recently, the Cadets conducted a meet-and-greet with children who are part of MUSC's Child Life Department. Under the supervision of Child Life Department Manager Sandra Oberman and Child Life Specialist/Atrium Coordinator Lacey McInish, members of volleyball team played games, signed autographs and spent time with the children.

College Seeks Past Mascot Information
Did your or any of your family’s pet bulldog ever roam the sidelines of Johnson Hagood Stadium for a home football game? If so, we want to know more about it.
Specifically, we are seeking the name(s) of any former live Citadel mascot(s) and the dates in which the dog served as the Cadets’ lucky charm for a minimum of four events. If you have photos, we’d love to have those as well.

And Having Absolutely Nothing to Do with Athletics
With high school and college graduations upon us, here are a few ideas for practical gifts to celebrate all of those new diplomas:
- Cash. Not to be rude, but this is always a winner for any graduate. As an alternative, you might want to think about a gift card to a bookshop or to a local spa or boutique.
- Charitable. You could make a donation to a charitable organization in a graduate's name. A couple of options that might be popular with grads who want to change the world: Buy an animal for someone in another part of the world through Heifer.org. Or make a donation through Kiva.org that allows you to make microloans to projects all over the world and track how the project is going, or even to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. The good news: Those who get the help repay the loans, which can then be given again to another project.
- Practical. Sometimes practical things last and make a big impact on someone's life in a little way. Examples: Sewing kits, fans, teapots, desk lamp and great sheets.
- Monogrammed. There are all sorts of things that you can put monograms on -- towels, insulated tumblers, totes, bags and more.
- Paper goods. Two ideas we like: Embossed,
professional stationery or a leather journal.
