We hope you and yours had a wonderful, safe and cool Fourth of July.
According to reports, the Corps of Cadets this fall will be as large as it’s ever been. For the first time, The Citadel is activating Victor Company, making the Corps now 21 companies strong. And on Aug. 11, we will matriculate the Class of 2016 which is projected, for a sixth consecutive year, will include more than 700 students.
As you’ve come to expect, we have another solid issue of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!
An environmentally-controlled luxury suite at Johnson Hagood Stadium is available in time for the season. If you have an interest, please contact Senior Associate Athletics Director John McAleer ’72 at 843/953-1354 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Citadel’s live Bulldog mascots, General and Boo, support many charitable groups, and this is one in which you can help their cause.
The Georgia English Bulldog Rescue group has been entered to win a van to help them rescue hurt, sick and abandoned bulldogs in South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
These dogs have been dealt a bad deal in life but are good dogs that can still thrive in a good, loving home. Everyone who works for the Georgia English Bulldog Rescue group is a volunteer, so winning this van will go a long way to help them meet their mission.
In order to show your support, simply go to Nalley Driven for a Cause on Facebook. The click the like button at the top of the page and the "Vote Now" button under the advertisement. From there, click on "Vote Now" in the Georgia English Bulldog Rescue box.
You can vote once every day until July 10. Every vote counts and will help bulldogs throughout the region, so please vote as often as you can and spread the word.
The Citadel Football Association will present the Third Annual Women’s Football Clinic on Friday, July 27 at Seignious Hall on campus.
The experience is open to ladies and teenage girls only. Registration is 5-6 pm and the event runs from 6-9 pm. Advance cost is $50 per person or two for $85, and $75 for on-site registration.
Attendees to Football 101 will spend time going behind-the-scenes with tours of the team’s meeting room, weight room, and training and equipment rooms. Citadel coaches will provide instruction on the basics of the game as well as the option offense that is currently being utilized by the Bulldogs. Participants will also get in-depth instruction in player positions, walking through plays in addition to offensive and defensive strategies.
A catered dinner for all attendees will be held at the Pearson Lounge at Johnson Hagood Stadium. A special program will follow with Kay Higgins, wife of head coach Kevin Higgins, and other of the coaches’ wives, in addition to a tour of the press box area.
Prior to the dinner, the group will “hit” the stadium field for a “practice” that includes running plays, passing and receiving, tackling dummies and the all-important “fun run to the end zone,” where one can perform individual touchdown dances.
Goody bags for all attendees contain a T-shirt, a complete football information notebook, a 2012 souvenir schedule poster and wallet schedule, and two reserved-seat tickets ($50 value) to a Citadel home football game.
Last year, more than 50 women enjoyed a memorable time and learned enough about football to impress even their husbands and/or male friends.
A portion of the clinic is tax deductible as proceeds benefit The Citadel Football Association’s Scholarship through The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

“To me, it’s a no-brainer and I think it’s a great move by the NCAA. We are here to try to get better as players, and the best time to do that is in the summer. … You get to spend time with them and communicate with them. And if we are not allowed to do that, somebody will be doing it. It’s just better for programs all around for the NCAA to let the coaches they are going to play for work with them.
“It’s a process every day to come back. It’s not the injury that ruins athletes’ careers, it’s their mentality coming back from the injury.”
“This is going to going to be one of the most special seasons we’ve had in a long time. You can see it in the guys’ eyes, and I’m going to be a part of it. I’m playing this season.”
