Bulldogs Drop Series Opener to Davidson 6-2

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Henry Sisson tossed his third complete game of the season to lead Davidson College to a 6-2 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel Friday evening at Wilson Field. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 20-27 on the year and 9-13 in the conference. The two teams will take Saturday off as Damon Ardis, Justin Mackert and Nick Orvin will return to Charleston to graduate with the Class of 2012 and the clubs will close the series with a doublehead on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.

Sisson scattered six hits and allowed two runs while striking out four and walking two. Jake Berman and James Cerbie each collected two hits for the Wildcats, who improve to 17-26, 8-17 in the SoCon.

Calvin Orth had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs, while Austin Pritcher took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Pritcher struck out three and walked two. Orvin's single in the fifth is the 310th of his career at The Citadel, moving him into a tie for 4th all-time with former Bulldog Bryan Altman (2007-10).

Davidson jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, posting a pair of runs off Pritcher. After a lead-off single by Berman, Pritcher retired the next two batters, but Berman advanced to third on two wild pitches during the span. A walk by Forrest Brandt put runners at the corners and the Wildcats attempted a double steal. Pritcher's throw to first caught Brandt off first by the throw home by Calvin Orth was late and Berman slid under the tag of Joe Jackson for a 1-0 lead. Cerbie's single moved Brandt to third and a RBI single to left by Ryan Lowe doubled Davidson's lead to 2-0.

The Bulldogs cut the deificit in half in the third, scoring a single run on a RBI double by Mason Davis. Hughston Armstrong reached on a fielding error at first, but was forced out at second on Nick Orvin's sacrifice bunt attempt. Davis stepped in a drilled a 0-1 pitch to the gap in left center, scoring Orvin from first for a 2-1 score.

The Wildcats recouped the run in the fourth when Michael Zeblo hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a passed ball by Jackson. Davidson added to the lead in the fifth, plated two more runs for a 5-1 lead. Andrew Barna led off the frame with a double to the wall in center and Brandt deposited a 2-0 pitch from Pritcher over the wall in left for a two-run homer, his second of the season.

The Citadel plated another run in the sixth, cutting Davidson's lead to 5-2. Justin Mackert drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Daniel Gerow, the Wildcats' catcher. Bo Thompson lined a 2-1 pitch from Sisson down the left-field line to plate Mackert for his 20th RBI of the season.

Davidson tacked on an insurance run in the eighth for the 6-2 final. Cerbie led off with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a groundout. The Wildcats pulled off a suicide squeeze bunt as Cerbie broke for home and Zeblo's bunt was fielded by Drew DeKerlegand with no chance for a play at home.
