Late Inning Offense Sends Elon to Win over Bulldogs

ELON, N.C. – After scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to knot the game at five, The Citadel surrendered 13 runs over next two frames to hand Elon an 18-5 victory in Southern Conference action Thursday night at Latham Park. The Bulldogs fall to 24-30 overall, 13-16 in the league and will look to avoid the series sweep against the Phoenix Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the regular-season finale.

Using RBI singles from Justin Mackert and Bo Thompson to knot the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs then gave up three runs in the bottom of the frame as Elon responded to take the 8-5 lead. With one away and a runner on first, Chris Bresnahan dropped a single down the right-field line to put runners at the corners. Eric Serra followed with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to drive in the go-ahead run.  A failed pickoff at first by Zach Sherrill allowed Bresnahan to score from third and Serra would later score on a single by Alex Swim.

The Phoenix put up 10 runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.  Elon recorded nine of its 14 walks in the bottom of the eighth, including five coming with the bases loaded.  In the frame, Elon posted two hits - a two-run single from Quinn Bower and a RBI single by Casey Jones and used one Bulldog error.

Jordan Darnell (2-2) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.  The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out two. Elon starter David Whitehead gave up three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings and walked four. Swim and Ryan Kinsella each posted three-hit games, while Kinsella, Bresnahan and Quinn Bower each had three RBI.

James Reeves (6-4) was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on two hits in an inning of relief. Citadel starter Kevin Connell allowed four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Thompson had two hits and two RBI to lead the Bulldog offense.

The Citadel took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Tyler Griffin lined a RBI single to score Joe Jackson and Bailey Rush picked up RBI on a fielder's choice.

Elon answered with two in its half of the frame, as Bresnahan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Serra drove in a run on a fielder's choice.  The Phoenix took a 4-2 lead in the third on the strength of a two-run double from Kinsella and plated its fifth run on a single by Swim in the fourth.

Thompson's sixth inning single drove in a run for the Bulldogs to cut the deficit to 5-3 before tying the game in the seventh.
