Tyler Griffin Earns National Award from Collegiate Baseball
Charleston, S.C. – After a sizzling four-game stretch which included a three-homer performance, Citadel junior right fielder Tyler Griffin has been honored as one of three national hitters of the week by Collegiate Baseball.
Griffin shared the award with Marcus Davis of Florida State and Charlie White of Maryland.
Griffin went 8-for-17 last week for a .471 batting average. He scored three runs and drove in nine and became the first Bulldog since Richard Jones against Davidson in 2009 to hit three home runs in a game when he accomplished the feat in the middle game of the North Florida series on Saturday.
The previous day against the Ospreys, Griffin went 4-for-5 with an RBI. He nearly hit a fourth home run in the series when he drove one to the fence in left center in Sunday's game but had to settle for a sacrifice fly.
Griffin is one of only four players in Bulldog history to hit three home runs in a game. In addition to Jones, the other two players to do so were Garrick Haltiwanger vs. South Carolina in 1994 and Philip Hartig vs. UNC Greensboro in 2001.
For the season, Griffin is batting .484 (15-for-31) with a double, a triple, four home runs and 11 RBI and has 30 total bases for a slugging percentage of .968. He ranks first in the Southern Conference in total bases, tied for first in hits and home runs and tied for second in RBI, one behind teammate Joe Jackson. He also stands second in slugging percentage and fifth in batting average.
Griffin's hot start has raised his career batting average from .247 entering the season to a current .282. He began the year with five home runs over his first two seasons before slamming four over the first seven games of the 2013 campaign while also increasing his RBI total to 50.
After seeing their scheduled game against UNC Asheville on Tuesday postponed by impending rain, the Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday with a 2:00 game at Charleston Southern.
The Citadel returns to Riley Park this weekend when it hosts the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Homewood Suites. The Bulldogs play Pittsburgh on Friday and Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, both at 4:00, before playing UNC Asheville in a Sunday doubleheader at 2:30.
