The Citadel Hosts Second Baseball Tournament of Season this Weekend at Riley Park
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel will play host to Pittsburgh, VCU and UNC Asheville in the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Homewood Suites Friday through Sunday at Riley Park.
The Bulldogs take on the Panthers at 4 p.m. on Friday and VCU at the same time on Saturday before playing UNC Asheville in a doubleheader Sunday at approximately 2:30. The second game is the makeup of a contest rained out on Tuesday.
The games not involving The Citadel begin at noon on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The Citadel (4-4) will be looking at snap a three-game losing streak when it takes on the Panthers. Pittsburgh is off to a 5-1 start, sweeping perennial national power Wichita State and taking two of three against Wofford last weekend.
VCU has won all five of its games to open the 2013 campaign including a victory over Elon while UNC Asheville is 3-4 on the year.
The Citadel has played a total of seven games with three wins against the teams in the field. Two of those victories have come over UNC Asheville by scores of 4-3 in 2007 and 13-7 in 2008, both at Riley Park.
The Bulldogs have dropped two of three regular season games to VCU and lost 3-2 in 11 innings at Clemson in the NCAA East Regional in 1998. The only meeting with Pittsburgh resulted in a 12-10 Panther victory in the 1995 Mideast Regional in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Citadel will be going with its usual weekend pitching rotation of senior right-hander Austin Pritcher, sophomore lefty James Reeves and freshman righty Austin Mason. The trio has combined to allow only nine earned runs in 35 1/3 innings for an ERA of 2.29.
Pritcher has not given up a run in 13 innings so far this season and has not allowed an earned run at Riley Park in his last 32 1/3 innings. Mason has turned in two solid starts to begin his collegiate career, surrendering only seven hits and three runs in 12 1/3 innings for an ERA of 2.19.
Following this weekend's games, the Bulldogs play at Winthrop on Tuesday before opening Southern Conference play against Samford on March 8-10 at Riley Park.
