Groselle Among 10 Finalists for Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The Citadel's senior center Mike Groselle was named on Wednesday as one of 10 finalists for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award, sponsored by Premier Sports Management.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,® the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced in October. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 25. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

This accolade comes one week after Groselle was named to the Capital One 2012-13 CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 first team.  He is also among the nominees for the Lou Henson Award (College Insider National Player of the Year) and the Wooden Cup Award (Citizenship Award).

The Plano, Texas, native is a civil engineering major with a 3.693 GPA and holds the rank of captain within the Corps of Cadets. Since coming to The Citadel in 2009, Groselle has been named to the Dean's List on five occasions, which he achieved by carrying a GPA of 3.2 of better for a semester. He has also earned five Gold Stars, given to a cadet who earns a 3.7 GPA or better in a semester.

"I am excited for Mike and his family that he was selected as one of the ten finalists for the Senior Class Award," said head coach Chuck Driesell. "I am not surprised by his selection as Mike goes above and beyond the criteria within the four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

"Mike has spent his entire college career making an impact in all of these areas and is certainly worthy of this award.  His hard work and commitment to being the best that he can be is truly a credit to The Citadel and the NCAA as he represents both in a first class manner."

Those distinctions have allowed Groselle to earn Southern Conference Academic All-Conference accolades in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

The 6-8, 244-pound center has also made his impact on the court. Entering this weekend's series against Chattanooga and Samford, Groselle has started all 21 games for the Bulldogs and tops the team in 10 statistical categories including field goals (129), field goals attempted (222), field goal percentage (.581), free throws made (57), offensive rebounds (70), defensive rebounds (94), total rebounds (164), points (315) and point per game average (15.0).

The men's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four® in Atlanta April 6 and 8.
