Citadel Basketball Returns Home on Thursday for Meeting with Eagles
Charleston, S.C. — The Citadel basketball team makes its return to McAlister Field House following a three-game road trip when the Bulldogs host Georgia Southern at 7:05 p.m.
The Bulldogs (6-17, 3-10 SoCon) are looking to snap a two-game losing skid following losses at Chattanooga and Samford and at the same time complete their first season sweep of the Eagles since the 2008-09 season. In January, The Citadel earned its first SoCon victory with a 70-55 victory at Georgia Southern.
Since suffering that loss Georgia Southern (10-15, 4-8) has dropped four of its last six games, including a pair of overtime losses to Appalachian State. The Eagles are third in the South Division standings, two games in front of The Citadel in the loss column.
In the first meeting of the season Matt Van Scyoc scored a game-high 21 points and led three Citadel players in double figures as the Bulldogs snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 70-55 victory over Georgia Southern at Hanner Field House. The freshman guided the Dogs to their first 60 percent shooting performance (24-40) since a meeting with Davidson on Jan. 26, 2011.
Van Scyoc established a new season-high in points after hitting 7-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Those five treys topped a Citadel lineup that finished 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the perimeter. The freshman swingman also made his presence felt defensively with two blocks in 36 minutes.
Also reaching double-digits for The Citadel were Mike Groselle (15) and Marshall Harris III (11). Groselle notched his 14th double figure outing of the season after hitting 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Harris eclipsed the mark with a 3-of-5 performance from the field, which included two 3-pointers. He also knocked down 3-of-4 from the free throw line to help The Citadel end the game 13-of-16 (81.3%) from the charity stripe.
Georgia Southern also managed to place three players in double figures, including C.J. Reed who netted a team-high 13 points. Reed finished 5-of-13 from the floor, converting three from beyond the perimeter, in 33 minutes of action. Reed was joined offensively by the duo of Tre Bussey (12) and Eric Ferguson (10). Ferguson crashed the glass for a team-high eight rebounds.
