Groselle, Van Scyoc Receive Southern Conference Honors by Coaches & Media
Spartanburg, S.C. – Citadel center Mike Groselle was tabbed as all-conference by the Southern Conference coaches and second team all-conference by members of the media, while forward Matt Van Scyoc was named to the all-freshman team by the coaches and media on Tuesday.
Groselle, who played at least 30 minutes in all but two SoCon games, capped off conference play by averaging 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds. The Plano, Texas, native eclipsed the 20-point mark against six league schools including a season-high 24 points against Wofford (Jan. 31) and Furman (Feb. 28).
In the final two weeks of the season, Groselle led the Bulldogs to victories over Appalachian State and Furman with his two double-doubles. In an overtime win over the Mountaineers, Groselle totaled 22 points and 14 rebounds. He followed that performance with a 24-point, 10-rebound outing in his final game at McAlister Field House against the Paladins.
Groselle placed favorably among the SoCon leaders in scoring average (3rd; 16.4), total rebounds (6th; 131), offensive rebounds (1st; 54), defensive rebounds (12th; 77) and field goal percentage (2nd; 57.4).
Van Scyoc, who started all 29 contests this season, became the first freshman in Citadel history to rank in the top 10 in points (321), field goals made (105), 3-point field goals made (55), free throws made (56) and minutes played (904).
Against league competition the Green Lake, Wisc., native averaged 11.6 points and knocked down 41.7 percent (68-163) from the floor in SoCon play. He eclipsed the 20-point plateau on four occasions including a season-high 24 points against Appalachian State. In that contest he knocked down 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the field and converted 4-of-6 (66.7%) from beyond the arc. Van Scyoc also climbed the glass for six rebounds, tying his mark against league competition.
The rookie finished the SoCon regular season ranked in scoring average (23rd; 11.6), free throw percentage (10; 77.6) and 3-point field goals made (8th; 35).
The Citadel (8-21, 5-13 SoCon) returns to the court Friday night at 8:30 when the Bulldogs take on Western Carolina (13-18, 9-9 SoCon) in the opening round of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.
