Hilton Head, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team snapped its 11-match losing streak today by defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-2. The scheduled match between The Citadel and Oberlin on Monday at 3 p.m. was cancelled due to a conflict in Oberlin's schedule.
The Bulldogs started off the match strong earning the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. David Orces and James Atkinson paired up for the fifth time this season and earned their first victory as a duo. The Bulldog tandem took down the Warhawks' Andrew Bayliss and Mitch Osborne 8-3. In the No. 2 slot for the Dogs, Dillon Berkabile and Peter Bleach won their second match this season defeating Byron Balkin and Cameron Laktash 8-2.
Orces, Bleach and Sperr were the standout players for The Citadel, also earning victories in singles play. Orces defeated Balkin in a quick two-set match 6-3, 6-1. The Bulldog junior has won his last eight matches in the No. 1 position for the Dogs and claimed his 11th win on the season. Orces is just three wins shy of his career best total of 14 duals wins from last season with four matches left before the SoCon tournament.
Bleach found his niche in the No. 5 slot for the Dogs, winning his third consecutive match. The freshman defeated Brady Porter in two sets 6-1, 6-1 and improved his record to 4-12 overall and 3-2 competing in the No. 5 position.
Sperr, the third Bulldog to currently have a win streak, improved his to two consecutive matches. The Bulldog sophomore defeated Brian Klein 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot and is now 9-9 on the season. Sperr has more than quadrupled his wins from last season from two to nine with four matches left in the season.
The Bulldogs will finish out their last four matches with Southern Conference play. Up next for The Citadel is a trip to Boone, N.C., to take on Appalachian State on Thursday at 2 p.m.
