Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team will compete in the 2012 Southern Conference Championship slated for April 19-22. The Bulldogs enter the tournament as the No. 11-seed and will face off against No. 6-seed Elon in the first round of play on Thursday at 2 p.m., at the Earle Tennis Center.
The first round of men's play will be hosted by The Citadel at the Earle Tennis Center. The opening match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., as No. 8 Chattanooga and No. 9 Davidson face off. The following match is planned for 11:30 a.m., as No. 7 Wofford will compete against No. 10 Georgia Southern, with The Citadel and Elon match scheduled to conclude the first day competition.
The remaining men's matches will be hosted by the College of Charleston at its home facility, Patriots Point.
The championship match is set for Sunday at 10 a.m. The Citadel will host the second round of the women's SoCon Tournament on Friday.
The first match of the day is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., as top seeded UNCG, which received a first round bye, will face off against the winner of the No. 8 Georgia Southern and No. 9 Davidson match. The following match is planned for 10:30 a.m., as No. 4-seeded Samford will matchup against No. 5-seeded Chattanooga. The No. 2-seed College of Charleston is set to begin play at 1:00 p.m., as the Cougars will compete against the winner of the No.7-seeded Elon and No.10-seeded Wofford match. The last match of the day is set for 3 p.m., as No. 3 Furman will face off against the winner of the No. 6 Appalachian State and No. 11 Western Carolina match.
The remaining women's matches will be hosted by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point. The championship match is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Citadel vs. Elon Preview
The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a 5-17 overall record. David Orces, first team all-conference honoree, led The Citadel with an outstanding 13-6 dual record and 6-4 SoCon mark. Sophomore Elliott Sperr also had an exceptional season recording nine dual wins. In doubles the duo of Sperr and Alex Howle led the team with a 10-12 dual record and 4-6 conference record.
The Bulldogs and Phoenix previously met during the regular season on March 4 at the Earle Tennis Center. The contest was the first match in Southern Conference play for the Bulldogs. Elon overtook the Bulldogs 7-0 in the contest and currently holds a 7-2 all-time series advantage.
The Phoenix enter the tournament with an 8-14 overall record and 5-5 conference record. Elon is led by Cameron Silverman with a 15-7 overall record and 9-1 SoCon record. Silverman was awarded first team all-conference honors in singles and was named first team all-conference with teammate Eric Turner in doubles. Silverman was also the SoCon Player of Week for the weeks of March 13 and April 3. Stefan Fortmann and Jordan Kaufman also had outstanding seasons and both were awarded all-freshman honors by the Southern Conference.
The winner of the match will face No. 3 seed Appalachian State on Friday at 3 p.m., at Patriots Point.
