Orces Earns Finals Appearance in Division II Singles of 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Championships

Athens, Ga. - David Orces earned a spot in the finals of the Division II singles of the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Championships to be played on Monday at 9 a.m. The senior netter will take on Hunter Koontz from Virginia Tech.

Since Friday Orces has competed in five exciting matches to reach the finals. On Friday the Guayaquil, Ecuador, native defeated Southern Conference foe Rafael Racy from Georgia Southern in two quick sets 7-5, 6-1. This was the first meeting between these two fierce competitors, and the Bulldogs are scheduled to take on the Eagles on Mar. 16 during the regular season.

Orces continued to play well on Saturday as he overpowered Marko Lovrinovic from Virginia Tech in a thrilling three-set match. The Bulldog netter went up early taking the first set 6-4, but Orces' Hokie opponent fought back to take the second set 6-4. Orces ultimately won the third set 7-5, to move on to competitive play later on in the day.

In round of 16 action Orces continued to overtake the field taking down Pedro Scocuglia from Armstrong Atlantic in another heart-stopping three-set match 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5).

During quarterfinals action on Sunday, Orces once again played in an electrifying three-set match against Casey Kay of Georgia. Having the home advantage didn't help Kay, as the Bulldog senior won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

As Orces moved to semifinals later on the day on Sunday, the Bulldog couldn't be stopped as he overtook Rogerio Ribeiro in his fourth three-set match of the tournament. Losing the first set for the first time in the tournament, Orces went down 3-6. Orces fought back to take the second set 6-3 and carried over the momentum to win the final set 6-3 to take the match.

The championship match began at 9 a.m., this morning as Orces was scheduled to take on sophomore Koontz in their first-ever meeting on the courts.
