Orces Wins Singles Draw Championship at USC Upstate Fall Classic
Spartanburg, S.C. – David Orces, representing The Citadel men's tennis team, won the singles draw championship at the USC Upstate Fall Classic on Sunday.
As the No. 1-ranked seed in this tournament, Orces fought in an exciting three-set match to defeat No. 3-ranked Grayson Mills on Sunday morning to earn a spot in the finals. Mills went up early taking the first set 6-1, but Orces battled his way back to win the second set 6-1 to even the playing field. The Bulldog netter would take the match with superior play in the third set with a score of 6-3.
Orces played for the championship at 1 p.m., at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex against No. 7-ranked Rafael Berghaus. The Bulldog senior would take the match in two straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Last weekend Orces earned a spot in the Division II singles finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and over the course of fall tournament play has defeated 10 different opponents in singles draw.
Bulldogs Head Coach Kemper Baker expects Orces to excel during the season.
"Orces has great knowledge about the game of tennis," said Baker. "He has played excellent thus far in tournament play and I see great things for him during the regular season."
Orces and Peter Bleach were scheduled to compete for the doubles back draw championships Sunday afternoon, but because of rain the match was cancelled.
The Bulldogs will take a couple weeks off before traveling to Cary N.C., for the ITA Carolina Regional the weekend of Oct. 19-21.
