Orces, Sperr Compete in Final Day at Duckworth Fall Classic
Clemson, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team concluded the second day at the Duckworth Fall Classic hosted by Clemson with Elliott Sperr advancing to the Flight-4 singles back draw championships and David Orces contending for third place in Flight-1 singles.
Unable to defeat Mercer's Arsav Mohanty in main singles draw Friday morning, Sperr entered the back draw bracket. The Bulldog junior defeated August State's Javier Capriles in two straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-2 Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the Flight-4 championship match against Capriles' teammate Max Coulomb scheduled for today.
Orces was eliminated Saturday afternoon by Armstrong Atlantic's Matus Mydla in a thrilling three-set battle. The Bulldog netter went down early losing the first set 6-4, but found his momentum to even the match with a 6-3 score in the second set. Mydla would take the match with a score of 6-1 in the final set. Orces will have his chance today to compete for third place in Flight-1 singles against Lipscomb's Oliver Strecker.
In Flight-2 doubles, Orces and Sperr defeated ASU's Kenneth Mooney and Coulomb with a score of 8-1, but the Bulldog tandem was eliminate in the final round against Armstrong Atlantic's Sven Lalic and Furman's Sven Ivankovic to earn a second place finish.
Action resumed today at 9:00 a.m. at the Hokie Sloan Tennis Center. Results will be available following the conclusion of today's matches.
