East Carolina Hands Bulldogs First Loss


Greenville, N.C. – The Citadel tennis team suffered its first loss of the year as East Carolina defeated the Bulldogs 7-0 on Thursday at the River Birch Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs drop to 3-1 while the Pirates improve their record to 5-1 on the season.

Freshman Matthew McGill made his season debut for the Bulldogs but wasn't able to outlast junior Mario Martinez. McGill fell early losing the first set 6-1 but battled back to even the match winning 6-4 in the second set. Martinez would ultimately take the final set 6-3 to clinch the point.

David Orces, Peter Bleach and Jackson Pride all suffered their first singles loss on the year.

In the No. 1 position Orces was defeated by Joran Vliegen 6-1, 6-1. Vliegen has won his last six matches in the No. 1 slot for the Pirates. Nicolas Soriano defeated sophomore Bleach in the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-3 to extend his winning streak to four matches. Charleston native Pride suffered a loss in the No. 6 position to Colin Roller 7-6, 6-3.  

The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround as they will return to the courts on Saturday for their first home matches of the season at the Earle Tennis Center in a doubleheader against Benedict at 9 a.m., and Spartanburg Methodist at 1 p.m.
