Bulldogs Host Furman in Final Home Match of the Season
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team will host Furman on Saturday at 1 p.m., at the Earle Tennis Center in its last home match of the season.
After losing eight consecutive matches earlier this season the Bulldogs have won their last two non-conferences matches on the road. David Orces and Peter Bleach have stepped up in singles play and both recorded their 10th victory in the last outing against Coker on Thursday. Bleach is on a four-match winning streak while Orces has extended his streak to two matches.
The Citadel enters Saturday's match with a 7-9 overall record and 0-6 SoCon mark.
Senior Orces will be playing in his final home competitive match of the season on Saturday. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native have reached double-digit wins in singles in every season since his freshman year. As a freshman Orces earned a 14-7 dual record and was named to the SoCon Freshman All-Conference team. During his sophomore season Orces recorded a 14-9 mark and was awarded the Marion S. Lewis Tennis Award voted by The Citadel coaches and players. His junior year was highlighted by a first team all-conference selection in singles by the Southern Conference head coaches. Orces netted a 13-7 dual record and was bestowed the Marion S. Lewis Tennis Award and the MVP of the tennis team at the first-ever Citadel Athletic Award Banquet.
The Citadel and Furman have met a remarkable 70 times dating back to 1954. The Bulldogs have not beaten their conference rival since the 1989 season losing their last 25 attempts.
Before the match on Saturday Furman is scheduled to play Chattanooga today at noon. The Paladins (3-12, 0-4) have struggled this season as they have yet to earn a conference win. The Citadel and Furman remain the last two teams in the Southern Conference still winless in league play.
With seven wins on the season in singles the Paladins are led by freshman Matt Browne who is on a two-matching winning streak. In doubles action the tandems of Joel Cook/Andrew Mellow and Jacob Behal/Tyler Droll lead the team with a 4-8 and 4-5 record, respectively.
