Citadel Tennis Begins SoCon Championship Action on Thursday
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team opens the 2013 Southern Conference Championships on Thursday at Elon University.
The Bulldogs concluded their regular season 7-13 while going 0-10 in conference play. The Citadel netters have improved their overall win recorded from just a season ago when they went 5-18. The Dogs started the season 5-1, a record that marked their best start since the 1999 season.
The team is led by senior David Orces and sophomore Peter Bleach who enters the tournament with 11 victories each. In doubles action the tandem of Orces and Oliver Dedding are the frontrunners for The Citadel with a 10-7 dual record while going 3-6 in league play.
The 2013 Southern Conference Men's & Women's Tennis Championships will take place on Thursday, April 18th through Sunday, April 21st. The 64th annual Men's SoCon Tennis Championship will be hosted by Elon and held at both the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center. The winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Last season the College of Charleston defeated Samford 4-0 and earned its second SoCon title since joining the conference.
The Citadel will enter the tournament as the No. 11-seed and is scheduled to take on No. 6-seed Georgia Southern on Thursday at 1 p.m., at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Earlier this season Georgia Southern defeated The Citadel in a 7-0 decision at the Earle Tennis Center. Although The Citadel did not win the doubles point, the duo of Orces and Dedding won in the No. 1 position over Rayane Djouad and Marco Osorio 8-3.
The Eagles enter the match on Thursday 10-8, 6-4 SoCon. GSU is led by Djouad who was tabbled SoCon Freshman of the Year. Djouad is 14-2 in dual matches on the season and 9-1 in the SoCon.
