Defending SEARC Champion Bulldogs Head to Dahlonega to Open the Season at SEARC 1

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team will open the 2011-12 season with a Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match in Dahlonega, Ga.  The Bulldogs captured the 2010-11 SEARC title, beating rival N.C. State in four of five conference matches.

Last season's championship run was the Bulldogs' first in ten years and Coach William Smith's team will hope to carry last years' momentum into this season as they kick-off their 2011-12 slate with two consecutive conference matches.

The Citadel enters this season having lost their best shooter in Winston Dorian. Dorian led the Bulldog men's team in all 13 matches, firing a personal-best 582 against Air Force and an impressive 567 in the SEARC Championships en route to the SEARC title. The Bulldogs will also feel the loss of veteran leaders Stephen Kinn, Thomas Kersey and captains Alison Hayes and Joseph Trippi, but will return their top female shooter in junior Julia McCullohs.

McCullohs, who was named the 2011-12 women's team captain, is coming off a season where she led all Bulldog women with an air rifle average of 561.85, nearly ten points higher than sophomore Terri Craig (553). McCullohs led all Bulldog shooters in an air rifle match against Air Force where she fired a personal-best 577.

On the men's side, senior Kristofer Small was named captain and will enter his fourth season as a Bulldog shooter. A year ago Small finished with an air rifle average of 547.73, with his best match coming in the SEARC 2 competition where he marked a score 565.

Saturday's match will showcase all 10 conference teams: Augusta State, Birmingham Southern, Clemson, Georgia Military, Georgia Tech, Mercer, N.C. State, North Georgia College and State University, The Citadel and Wofford.
