Wutzer Leads Bulldogs to Second Place Finish at SEARC 1
Dahlonega, Ga. – Freshman William Wutzer led all Bulldog shooters on Saturday with an air rifle mark of 562 at the first Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match of the season. The Bulldogs finished the competition in second place after a tiebreak shootout with North Georgia College and State University.
The defending SEARC Champion Bulldogs jumped right into conference play, opening the season at the SEARC 1 competition. With the loss of key shooters Winston Dorian, Stephen Kinn and Joseph Trippi, the young Citadel Rifle team would need to step up and they did just that.
"Our freshmen shot very well and Wutzer earned his letter in his first match, shooting a top team score of 562," said Bulldogs Head Coach William Smith.
N.C. State took the team crown, recording an overall score of 2,246, while The Citadel and NGSCU played to a 2,232-point draw at the end of the competition, forcing a tie-break shootout that the Bulldogs would win to capture second place.
"There is going to be tough shooting and strong competition across the conference this year. Looking at our averages, we will be competitive with N.C. State as long as we get an above average match from our number four shooter. This worked last year and in this match as Bernard stepped up," said Smith.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend as they host the SEARC 2 competition at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. The three-day competition will begin Friday, Oct. 6 and will also include NCAA matches with Jacksonville State, Texas Christian, and Columbus State.
