The Citadel Rifle Looks to Start 2012 Conference Slate with a Win at Home on Saturday

Charleston, S.C. – The Bulldog rifle team begins conference play again as they host the fifth Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match of the season at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets are coming off a first-place showing at the SEARC 4 on Nov. 5, in Spartanburg, S.C.

Bulldog Head Coach William Smith feels confident in his young rifle squad going into conference play after shooting very well against two top-10 teams last week.

"Everyone is on a roll and things are looking good for the start of conference play this Saturday," said Smith.

The Bulldogs are coming off an NCAA match against Ole Miss on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Oxford, Miss., where they were downed by the sixth ranked Rebels, 4638-4373. Freshman Robert Jackson and junior captain Julia McCullohs led all Bulldog air rifle shooters with a 571 and 568, respectively.

Two days later, the Cadets returned home where the young Citadel marksmen continued to improve in a well fought competition against No. 5 University of Alaska-Fairbanks at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. The Nanooks came out on top, 4644-4401. The 243-differential was the smallest loss margin that the Bulldogs have posted against powerhouse Alaska in over five years.

The story for the Bulldog men this season continues to be the success of the freshman shooters. In Tuesday's match, freshmen Robert Jackson and William Wutzer led all Bulldog air rifle shooters, firing personal-bests of 576 and 572, respectively. The tandem has now emerged as the teams' leading marksmen in each of the seven matches this season.
