Bulldog Rifle Captures Second Place at SEARC 6/NCAA Sectional
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team fired an air rifle score of 2263 to finish just 21 points behind N.C. State, at the sixth Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match of the season at the Inouye Marksmanship Center this past weekend. The Bulldogs also shot small bore as part of the NCAA Sectional, recording a score of 2206.
Aside from the SEARC competition, teams also recorded small bore scores to be sent to the NCAA and added into their averages. Following the Wolfpack and the Bulldogs in conference play was North Greenville (2235), Clemson (2213), Georgia Military College (2186) and Wofford (2162). On Sunday, N.C. State nabbed first in small bore with a score of 2282, followed by The Citadel men (2206), Clemson (1972) and The Citadel women (1908).
Senior captain Kristofer Small paced the Bulldogs, carding an air rifle score of 572. Finishing behind Small was the trio of first-year marksmen Richard Jackson (569), William Wutzer (564), Richard Hunton III (558).
Junior Julie O'Meara led the way for the Bulldog women with an air rifle score of 556, while Ashten Byrne finished close behind with a 550. The women's team was without top shooters Julia McCullohs and Terri Craig due to military obligations.
Byrne (514), along with freshman William Wutzer (561), led their respective teams in small bore action. Wutzer's mark earned him his second letter on the season in small bore to go along with his eight in air rifle.
The Bulldogs will have a week off before hosting the SEARC Championships at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Mar. 3.
