Bulldogs Set to Host SEARC Championships
Charleston, S.C. – After a two-week hiatus, The Citadel rifle team will be back in action as it hosts the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference Championships on Saturday at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. The Bulldogs, who captured the 2011 championship in dramatic fashion over N.C. State, currently stand second in the conference behind the Wolfpack.
The Bulldogs are coming off a SEARC 6 and NCAA sectional match on Feb. 18, where they carded an air rifle score of 2263 and a small bore mark of 2206 to capture second place.
Senior captain Kristofer Small paced the Bulldogs, carding an air rifle score of 572. Finishing behind Small was the trio of first-year marksmen Richard Jackson (569), William Wutzer (564), Richard Hunton III (558).
Junior Julie O'Meara led the way for the Bulldog women with an air rifle score of 556, while Ashten Byrne finished close behind with a 550. The women's team was without top shooters Julia McCullohs and Terri Craig due to military obligations.
The story all season has been the success of the young Bulldog team as their roster dawns six freshmen who have all stepped up to play an important role when needed. Four newcomers have earned their letter in either small bore or air rifle this season. Shooters earn their letters by posting a score of 560 or greater in both the small bore and air rifle competition.
