Bulldog Rifle Tops Military Rival VMI in Season Opener
Lexington, Va. – The Citadel men's and women's rifle teams opened its 2012-13 slate in dominant fashion, posting an overall score of 4,403-4,360 to take the team crowns in both air rifle and smallbore action on Saturday against VMI in Lexington, Va.
The Citadel men took the top four spots of the match in air rifle as Richard Hunton posted the day's top score of 565 en route to the Bulldogs' 2,250-2,019 win. Following behind Hunton was teammate William Wutzer (564), Franklin Wright (563) and Robert Jackson (558).
In men's smallbore action, The Citadel took the match by a score of 2,153-1,882. Jackson took third overall and tops among his teammates with a score of 549, while Nathaniel Moy (542) and Hunton (534) finished right behind the Bulldog leader.
On the women's side, senior Terri Craig and captain Julia McCullohs carded first and second place scores of 556 and 551, respectively, to give the women a 2,176-2,110 edge over the VMI women's team in air rifle.
Terri Craig also led the Bulldog women in smallbore action, carding a 516, while teammate Ashten Byrne finished closely behind with a mark of 514.
The Citadel has now topped the Keydets in each of their previous seven meetings.
The Bulldog marksmen will be back in action next weekend when they open Southeastern Air Rifle Conference play in Dahlonega, Ga., at SEARC 1.
