Citadel Golf Begins SoCon Championship Action on Sunday

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel opens the 2013 Southern Conference Championship on Sunday at the Moss Creek Golf Club's North Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The three-day tournament will take place on the par-72 and 5,955-yard course for the fifth straight year.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Bulldogs are led by freshman Eraina Manor who enters the weekend with a stroke average of 80.41 in 17 rounds of play. Her best finish of the season, tied for 10th, came at the Savannah College of Art & Design Invitational where she fired a 158 (+14). In that outing Manor became just the fifth player in program history to complete a top 10 finish.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE DOGS: Citadel freshman Eraina Manor fired a two-day score of 162 (+18) and finished in a four-way tie for 33rd at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate held at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club.
Manor recorded rounds of 83 and 79 to finish alongside Southern Conference competitors Shelby Winters (Wofford) and Rumbidzi Masamvu (Appalachian State).
The Citadel posted a 699 (+123) to complete the tournament 11th out of 12 participating teams. Appalachian State, the host team for the tournament, captured first place with a 610 (+34), while Winthrop (620, +44) edged Jacksonville State (629, +53) and Wofford (629, +53) who tied for third place.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW: Chattanooga will be seeking its fourth consecutive title after beating runner-up UNCG by three strokes in 2012. Furman has won the event 13 times, most recently in 2009, while Western Carolina won in 2003 and 2007 and College of Charleston won in 2006.
The Paladins are the top-ranked league team this season, checking into the Golfstat ratings at No. 68 nationally. Chattanooga follows closely at No. 74, while College of Charleston is No. 77. Elon is ranked 88th to give the SoCon four teams in the top 100.
Chattanooga junior Jordan Britt shot a 222 for medalist honors last season and will try to defend her individual title, while last season's runner-up, UNCG's Fanny Cnops, also returns in 2013. Cnops, the SoCon Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year last season, shot a 225 to finish three shots off of Britt's pace.
Furman's Laura Wearn, the SoCon's highest-ranked golfer nationally this season at No. 37, finished fifth last season. Cnops is ranked 55th nationally.
Appalachian State's Yue Xu, the 2010 champion, is also in this year's field.
