Wrestling Travels to Take on Gardner-Webb and Davidson

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team looks to pick up a pair of Southern Conference victories this weekend as the Bulldogs travel to face Gardner-Webb Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. and take on Davidson Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

About The Bulldogs (5-8, 1-2 SoCon)
The Bulldogs enter the weekend after finishing third at the All-Academy Championships at Air Force last weekend. Richard Alarcon (125) and Odie Delaney (285) captured titles, while Turtogtokh Luvsandorj (174) and Kelby Smith (197) each finished in second place. Delaney is ranked No. 15 in the latest InterMat rankings. 

About Gardner-Webb (5-9, 1-4 SoCon)
Gardner-Webb is coming off a week in which the Runnin' Bulldogs went 1-2 in dual match action with a 39-12 win over Millersville. Last Saturday, GWU split with Campbell and Millersville at home, as Campbell edged GWU 17-16 by way of a one-point tiebreaker involving the total points scored by both teams.  Gardner-Webb then went on to post four pins in the win over Millersville to finish the day at 1-1 overall. Tuesday night, Gardner-Webb dropped a 22-12 loss to Duke. Alex Medved and Travis Porter each went 3-0 overall on the week for the Runnin' Bulldogs and have both pushed their current winning streaks out to five matches in a row. 

What to Watch

  • Richard Alarcon and GWU's Michael Slaughter meet at 125 in a rematch of their bout at the Navy Classic. Slaughter picked up a 6-3 decision over Alarcon.
  • Pierre Frazile will look for revenge after suffering a 3-0 decision loss to GWU's Alex Medved at the Navy Classic.

Davidson is riding a three-match winning streak after a pair of victories over Anderson (37-9) and St. Andrews (33-9) in a tri-meet Tuesday night. Matt Zarth (125), Anthony Elias (133), Ben Hartshorn (141), Tyler Mullen (165), Ian Solcz (174) and Chris Cirenza (184) went undefeated on the night to lead the Wildcats. Davidson won six of the contested bouts against Anderson and earned two victories via forfeit. The Wildcats then took the first eight bouts against St. Andrews before dropping the 197-pound bout and forfeiting at heavyweight. 

What to Watch

  • Davidson's roster includes Kari Sickles, a United States Girls' Wrestling Association Folkstyle All-American in 2011. Sickles is the first female wrester to ever make the Wildcats' roster.

Delaney Named SoCon Wrestler of the Week
Odie Delaney was selected as the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competitions from January 11-17. Wrestling as a heavyweight, Delaney was dominant over the weekend at the Virginia Duals, notching a perfect 5-0 record with pins in three of his matches.
