Ruiz Qualifies for the 2012 Mexican Olympic Wrestling Team

Kissimmee, Fla. – Jesse Ruiz, a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at The Citadel, finished second at the 2012 at the FILA Pan American Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Sunday to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games, set for this August in London, England.

Competing for Mexico, Ruiz, a NAIA national champion while at Menlo College, qualified his country for the Olympics at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Ruiz placed second in the division, placing behind Canada's Arjan Bhullar. The top two finishers at each weight class qualified their countries for the 2012 Olympic Games.

"I'm ecstatic for Jesse," said Citadel head coach Rob Hjerling. "He put everything on the line for this. Congratulations go to him from all of us. I am proud that he is a part of The Citadel wrestling program."

Ruiz was instrumental in the recent success of Bulldog heavyweight Odie Delaney this past season. Ruiz worked closely with the 2012 Southern Conference champion, guiding him to his third NCAA Championship appearance and within one win of All-America status.
