Bulldog Wrestling Unveils 2012-13 Schedule

Complete Schedule

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel head wrestling coach Rob Hjerling has announced the team's 2012-13 schedule on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will host six matches and participate in a few of the most competitive tournaments in the country.

Opening the season will be the annual Citadel Open at McAlister Field House on Nov. 3 where the freshmen and sophomores get a shot to compete. That same weekend, the varsity lineup will head to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Hokie Open for the third consecutive year.

The Bulldogs will host five dual events this season beginning with Arizona State on Nov. 11 while Davidson, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Campbell and Gardner-Webb will also pay visits to Charleston.

The Citadel will head north for the next two events as the Bulldog grapplers take part in the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md., on Nov. 17 and once again return to University Park, Pa., on Dec. 2 for the Nittany Lion Open hosted by defending two-time NCAA Champions, Penn State. The Bulldogs also head to Reno, Nev., for the nationally prominent Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 16. The RTOC will include powerhouse programs such as Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Missouri and Wyoming.

The Citadel's season will be highlighted by perhaps the toughest regular season tournament in the country, the Southern Scuffle, on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The meet features nine, top 30 teams including four that are nationally ranked in the top 10.

"We are very excited to be part of the Southern Scuffle again this year," said Hjerling. "This is a very competitive tournament with some of the best teams in the country."

Following the Southern Scuffle the team will trek to Hampton Roads, Va., for the always competitive and nationally touted Virginia Duals.

After away matches at Appalachian State on Jan. 18 and Chattanooga on Jan. 27, The Citadel will head to West Point, N.Y., to participate in the 19th annual All-Academy Championships on Feb. 2 before closing out the regular season at VMI on Feb. 15 and the UNC Duals in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Feb. 17.

The 2013 SoCon Championships will take place in Lexington, Va., on March 9 and the NCAA Championships will be in Des Moines, Iowa from March 21-23.

"I think it is a competitive and well-balanced schedule for our lineup and roster," said Hjerling. "The team should be prepared for the SoCon Championships and the NCAA Championships by March."
