Khishignyam Takes First Place at Reno Tournament of Champions; Earns Outstanding Wrestler Award
Reno, Nev. – Ugi Khishignyam continued his domination in the 141-pound weight class as the redshirt freshman went 5-0 and downed two ranked wrestlers en route to capturing his second individual title of the season at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
Ugi, who didn't allow a single takedown or reversal in his five bouts, collected two falls (one pin and one technical fall) and a major decision before meeting 18th-ranked Nathan Pennesi from West Virginia in the semifinals.
The Mongolia native dominated Pennesi in an 8-3 decision to move him into the championship match against Oregon State's fourth-ranked Michael Mangrum.
In the final bout the Bulldog grappler used two takedowns while allowing just three escapes to narrowly edge out Mangrum and earn the title at 141. He was named the Reno Tournament of Champions' Most Outstanding Wrestler following the conclusion of the competition.
Ugi improved his record to 19-2 on the season and earned his second individual crown of his young career.
Odie Delaney highlighted the heavyweight division for the Bulldogs as the redshirt senior earned his 49th and 50th career pins. Delaney downed Southern Oregon's Tanner Marvel in the fifth minute before collecting his impressive 50th pin on Grand Canyon's Tyrell Fortune to move him into a semifinal match against longtime rival Jeremy Johnson from Ohio.
Johnson and Delaney have met five previous times in their careers including a championship bout at the Navy Classic on Nov. 17 where Delaney earned the 7-6 victory over the then 10th-ranked Johnson.
A season ago at the NCAA Championships, Johnson ended Delaney's season by taking a victory in the consolation bout leaving the Bulldog grappler one win shy of earning All-American status
In Sunday's bout Delaney got the best of the Bobcat wrestler again, collecting a 3-1 decision and earning a spot in the championship match against No. 11 Mike McClure who was able to earn the win by fall over Delaney at the 3:40 mark.
Delaney now holds a career record of 96-38 as he closes in on the 100-win plateau.
The Bulldogs captured eighth place as a team with 54.5 points. Oregon State earned the team title with 145 points.
