Wrestling Banner to Be Unfurled in McAlister Field House during Saturday’s Auction
Charleston, S.C. - The first championship wrestling banner that commemorates the 1967 team's Southern Conference crown will be unveiled during Saturday night's auction.
Several members from the '67 title team that was guided by Coach Don Murry will be in attendance for the unfurling. That 1967 team was undefeated and also posted impressive victories over the likes of N.C. State, the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech and Old Dominion.
In the league championship match, The Citadel downed second-place West Virginia by a convincing 80-to-69 margin. The championship team had seven finalists including four champions and three that were runners-up. The team also featured the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler in Ed Steers.
"I look forward to honoring the 1967 Southern Conference Championship team with a banner in McAlister Field House," said Bulldog wrestling coach Rob Hjerling. "It is very exciting to have members of that team back on campus and in attendance."
The Bulldogs will also recognize the championship team at the halfway mark of Sunday's final home conference match against Gardner-Webb which is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
