Odie Delaney Honored as February’s SoCon Wrestler of the Month

Spartanburg, S.C. – Odie Delaney earned his second straight monthly award on Monday after going 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Southern Conference action in February.

Delaney, who collected three SoCon wrestler of the week awards in February,  earned four pins, a major decision and two decisions to run his winning streak to 14 consecutive matches.

The redshirt senior cruised to the heavyweight title at the All-Academy Championships in West Point, N.Y., on Feb. 2, pinning Merchant Marines' Mason Reed in just 18 seconds and Coast Guard's Mark Howard in 38 before knocking off 28th-ranked Dan Miller of Navy 10-6 in the final.

Delaney also pinned Gardner-Webb's 33rd-ranked Travis Porter and VMI's Mike LaPrade in league dual wins before earning a major decision over Duke's Brian Self and an 11-4 decision over No. 24 North Carolina's Jake Barnhart.

The Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., product finished his dual career 20-3 in SoCon bouts, including three undefeated campaigns.

Delaney will look to become the first Citadel grappler to win four conference championship titles and needs just one more win to move into sole possession of second place in school history with 118.

The heavyweight has now earned a SoCon-record eight wrestler of the week citations throughout his career, including four this season and has opened up 2013 with two wrestler of the month awards.

Delaney and the Bulldogs will look to carry the momentum gained from a 5-2 regular season conference mark into Saturday's SoCon championship in Lexington, Va.
