Spartanburg, S.C. – Senior soccer defender Shanna Couch was selected for the 2012 Southern Conference Presidential scholarship on Monday. A five-person committee of SoCon administrators selected eight student-athletes out of a pool of 37 candidates based upon their accomplishments in academics, athletics and community service.
For her efforts in the classroom, the physical education major, who currently holds a 4.0 grade point average, was tabbed with 2010 CoSIDA ESPN Academic All-District 3 third team honors. Also in 2010, Couch was selected to the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-South Region team with honorable mention credits, was a recipient of the Coleman Lew Leadership Award and was a member of both the 2010 and 2011 Academic All-Conference teams.
Couch, a four-year starter and senior captain competed in 71 contests for the Bulldogs from 2008-2011, fifth-most all-time for any Citadel women's soccer player.
"I am extremely grateful for the scholarship and the opportunity to continue my education in physical therapy," said Couch.
After graduating in May, the Kansas City, Kan., native will head back to her home state where she will continue to pursue her career in physical therapy at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
"We are very proud of Shanna for receiving this well-deserved SoCon academic award," said Bulldog Head Coach Bob Winch.
