Bulldogs Drop 1-0 Heartbreaker to Winthrop

Rock Hill, S.C. – A 49th minute goal by Winthrop's Grace Radler was the difference on Wednesday night as The Citadel women's soccer was downed 1-0 on Eagle Field in Rock Hill, S.C. The loss drops the Bulldog's record to 1-5-0 on the season.

Jannel Johnson continued her productive freshman season recording five strong shots, including two on goal, on Wednesday. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native has posted 17 shots on the year, tying her with captain Vanessa Aponte for most on the team.

"Jannel had some really great opportunities that were close but just couldn't seem to get them in the right spots tonight," said Nicole Levermann. "We're expecting some really great things out of her as the season goes on."

The Eagles dominated possession to start the game as they were able to record eight of the game's first 10 shots, but with no luck as the Bulldog backfield, along with goalkeeper Sarah Katchen, were able to handle the attack.

The Bulldogs' best first half scoring opportunity came in the 36th minute when a header shot by Levermann was nabbed by Eagle goalkeeper Amelia Henderson before it could find the net. Minutes later Mariana Garcia fired another rocket towards Henderson, which she handled to collect her second of five saves on the day. The half ended as both teams played to a 0-0 draw.

Winthrop got off to a fast start in the second half when Grace Radler scored what would prove to be the game winner in the 49th minute. Eagle midfielder Jessica Logan played in a free kick from 40 yards which was headed by Megan David onto the foot of Radler who was waiting at the far post. Radler's shot went back across the goal beating Katchen.

The Citadel's best chance to draw even came in the 84th minute when a knuckling free kick from Vanessa Aponte forced a save by Henderson.

"Our weakness thus far has been that we have not played two consecutive good halves," said Levermann. "We came out slow in the first half and it showed but Sarah [Katcken] made some great saves and our defense held them off."

The Bulldogs will have one more non-conference match on Monday, Sept. 17 at Charleston Southern at 3 p.m., before opening up Southern Conference action with a two game home stretch against Furman on Sept. 21 and Wofford on Sept. 23.
