Charleston, S.C. – Vanessa Aponte fired six shots, leaving her just two behind The Citadel's all-time shots record on Friday as the Bulldogs were downed by Furman 3-0 in the team's Southern Conference opener on Washington Light Infantry Field.
The Bulldog backfield struggled with Furman's attack as the Paladins were able to fire 25 shots and put 11 on goal, keeping goalie Sarah Katchen busy. Katchen finished with eight saves and has posted 19 stops in the last two contests.
Furman broke the 0-0 tie in the 19th minute when Caitlin Shelton took a centered touch pass from Stephanie DeVita and drove it past Katchen to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Later in the second frame, DeVita was on the receiving end as Martha Hall placed a corner kick in the box that was headed into the goal by DeVita to give the Paladins a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.
Hannah Stanifer would add a late score for Furman to shut down the Bulldogs 3-0.
Aponte posted three of The Citadel's four shots on goal but was unable to get one passed Furman goalkeeper Rose Hull. Freshman Jannel Johnson led all Bulldogs with eight shots.
The loss drops The Citadel's record to 2-6-0 on the season, while the Paladins improved to 8-1.
The Bulldogs will close out the conference-opening weekend on Sunday when they host Wofford at 2 p.m., on Washington Light Infantry Field.
