The Citadel Falls to Samford in Battle of the Bulldogs

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Samford in a Friday afternoon conference battle on Washington Light Infantry Field. The loss drops The Citadel's record to 2-4-1 in the Southern Conference, while first place Samford improves their SoCon mark to 5-0-2.

Samford was able to notch the game's first score in the 30th minute when Lindsey Hansen crossed a pass into the box that Trine Taule was able to head off the post and onto the foot of Ariane Lukens, who came off the bench to record her first goal of the season and give her team a 1-0 lead.

The visiting Bulldogs came out in the second half and scored its second goal in the 52nd minute on a header shot in the box by Trine Taule, who collected the pass off a corner kick from Adrianne Mancino.

The Citadel's best scoring opportunity came in the 78th minute when Ruth Leiva fired a laser on goal but Samford goalkeeper Melissa Montgomery was able to stymie the attempt and record her fifth save of the game to help her team collect the 2-0 win.

"We didn't get the result we wanted, but we still played well and had several good shots on goal that we weren't able to put in," said junior forward Nicole Levermann. "Sarah [Katchen] had great saves in the back that kept us in the game and we are looking forward to getting Taylor Darling back for Sunday's game"

Vanessa Aponte led all Citadel shooters with five, while Mariana Garcia led the team with two shots on goal to give her 90 for her career. The junior is now just three shots on goal and one goal shy of tying Kelly Pesterfield's program records set in 2003.

Garcia, who entered the game tied with Pesterfield in total shots, passed the former Bulldog to move into second place in program history with 169 behind teammate Aponte (184).

The Citadel will close out its home schedule on Sunday when it takes on Chattanooga at 2 p.m. on WLI Field for Senior Day. The Bulldogs will honor senior goalkeeper Cassie Palmacci prior to the game.
