Bulldogs Fall to Western Carolina in Crucial SoCon Battle

Cullowhee, N.C. – Vanessa Aponte netted a 73rd minute goal to even the score but a Western Carolina goal with eight minutes left in the match lifted the Catamounts to a 3-2 victory in a critical conference battle on Sunday afternoon.

Mariana Garcia posted the game's first score when she gathered a pass from Jannel Johnson and drove it past Catamount goalkeeper Katie Jacobs in the 12th minute to give her team a quick 1-0 edge. The goal is Garcia's 14th of the season and marks the third consecutive game in which she has recorded a score.

The Bulldogs held the advantage until the 39th minute when Western Carolina forward Christine Kaznowski took a pass in the box and fired a shot over the head of Bulldog goalkeeper Sarah Katchen to even the score at one goal apiece heading into the half.

In the 66th minute the Catamounts took over the lead when Christine Cockrell recorded her first goal of the season on a five-yard shot in the box that found its way past Katchen.

Minutes later Aponte dribbled the ball into the box and fired a laser into the back of the net for an unassisted score that evened the game at 2-2.

Following the Aponte score the Catamounts went on the attack. After three off-target shots, Western Carolina's Laura Greb raised up and headed a Samantha Hodge pass into the goal for an 81st minute gamewinner.

The Bulldogs had two final chances to even the score when Ruth Leiva and Karina Schneider recorded shots on goal, but Jacobs was able to stymie the attack and lead the Catamounts to a 3-2 win.

The Citadel will put everything on the line in its season finale on Wednesday night in a "must win" match against crosstown foe College of Charleston. A Bulldog victory will launch them into the eighth and final spot in the Southern Conference tournament which will kick-off its opening round on Oct. 28.

"We had very good chances today but they weren't enough," said Garcia. "We still have a chance to get in the tournament and it is in our hands so we will learn from this and bring everything we got on Wednesday."
