Spartanburg, S.C. – Junior midfielders Mariana Garcia and Vanessa Aponte were voted to the 2012 All-SoCon first and second teams, respectively, by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Garcia had an historic season for the Bulldogs in 2012 as the Bogota, Colombia, native broke school career records in goals (31), points (67) and shots on goal (100). Garcia closed out her junior campaign tied for 12th in the NCAA with 14 goals and tied for 34th with 28 points.
Garcia has collected multiple awards during her three seasons at The Citadel. In 2010, she received Freshman and Southern Conference Player of the Year honors. A season ago Garcia was named second team all-conference.
Aponte's name has also been etched into The Citadel record book as the junior captain sits in first place all-time for career assists (12) and shots (204). In her three seasons, the Orlando, Fla., native has broken season records for assists with seven in 2012 and shots with 83 in 2011.
During her freshman season, Aponte was named to the 2010 SoCon all-tournament team when she helped lead the Bulldogs to their first conference tournament appearance and win. That same season she was also selected to the all-freshman team. In 2011, Aponte was tabbed with first team all-conference honors.
Jannel Johnson was selected to the conference's all-freshman team as the Pembroke Pines, Fla., native collected five goals and 13 points on the season. Johnson also posted 67 shots, which is the fourth most recorded in a season in Bulldog history.
