Bulldogs Make Sharp Turnaround, Visit UNC Wilmington Tuesday

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team looks to sustain the momentum set in a pair of weekend victories at the East Bay Deli Invitational when the team heads to UNC Wilmington for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday.

The play of all-tournament selections Mikaela Tracy and Lauren Hurt sparked the Bulldogs to their first two victories of the season against Stetson and Charleston Southern over the weekend. Hurt earned East Bay Deli Invitational All-Tournament honors after posting 26 kills and 16 blocks (seven solo). Meanwhile, Tracy quarterbacked the Bulldog offense with 112 assists (8.62 avg.), including a career-high 44 assists in the 3-2 win over Stetson to open tournament play.

UNC Wilmington holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time history between the two schools, dating back to the 2007 season. The Seahawks earned their first victory over the Dogs in four sets on Sept. 15. In the most recent match between the two programs, which took place on Oct. 11, 2011, UNCW edged a tough Citadel squad in five sets at McAlister Field House.

The UNCW volleyball team suffered a pair of losses in action in the Spartan Spiketacular at UNC Greensboro on Saturday, falling to Morehead State, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-20), in the morning before suffering a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-17) setback to Youngstown State in the nightcap. 

The Seahawks moved to 6-8 on the season with the pair of setbacks as it closed out the tournament portion of its regular-season schedule.

Against Morehead State, junior Aryn Bohannon tallied 12 kills and freshman Courtney Smith pitched in a career-high 11 spikes to power an Eagles attack that finished with 42 kills and a .264 hitting percentage.  Senior setter Caitlin Clark posted a double-double with a match-best 34 assists and 14 digs while junior Leslie Schellhaas tallied 11 digs.

Junior Christi Laite notched seven kills and sophomore Leah Gagliardi pitched in six for the Seahawks, who were limited to a (-.010) hitting percentage for the match. Junior Haley Collins finished with a team-high 10 digs while sophomore McKenzie Keightley notched a team-best five total blocks.

Versus Youngstown State, Junior Missy Hundelt tallied 19 kills and added a career-high 21 digs to power the Penguins lineup. Sophomore Alexis Egler also finished the match with a double-double as she tallied 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Shannon Watson joined Hundelt and Egler in double figures with 11 kills on the strength of a match-high .400 hitting percentage. Junior Casey D'Ambrose dished out 33 assists and added seven digs.

Sophomore Sarah Fitzgerald tallied 13 kills and sophomore Morgan Kline added 12 for UNCW. Keightley chipped in nine kills and added five total blocks. Freshman Victoria Phillips dished out 27 assists and added eight digs while senior Natalie Lahaie chipped in 14 assists. Collins was the only UNCW player to reach double figures in digs for UNCW, ending the match with 17.
