Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team is set to host a pair of Parent's weekend matches when the team welcomes Southern Conference rival Samford and Chattanooga to McAlister Field House.
The Bulldogs first take to the court against Samford on Saturday at 7:00 and follow with a Sunday afternoon match against Chattanooga, set for 3 p.m.
Earlier this week, in a tri-match, The Citadel volleyball team completed its second win of the season over Charleston Southern, prevailing in a five-set thriller by scores of 16-25, 25-20, 25-16, 19-25, 15-12 at McAlister Field House on Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs (4-18) managed 13 kills apiece from Rachael Farrell and Jessica Maxwell, while Amanda Rudnik and Ise d'Angelo added 12 and 10 kills, respectively, in the night cap of a tri-match at McAlister Field House. Freshman Mikaela Tracy was also an integral part of The Citadel's offense, handing out 46 assists, establishing her career-high for a match.
On the defensive end, the Dogs got a sound showing from the back row combination of Erin Bucherl (22 digs), d'Angelo (12 digs) and Tracy (11 digs). Up front they were able to rely on the performances of Farrell (five assisted blocks) and Lauren Hurt (four assisted blocks, one solo).
Earlier that day, behind a well-balanced lineup that included seven hits from Lauren Hurt, Rachael Farrell and Jessica Maxwell, The Citadel completed its second sweep of the season by defeating Savannah State by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25.17.
The Bulldogs converted 38 kills in 93 total attacks, committing only nine errors to close with a .312 hitting percentage. Sophomore Ise D'Angelo topped all hitters, finished with five kills in 10 attacks and a .500 hitting percentage. Meanwhile the Dogs defensive effort was anchored by the play of Erin Bucherl (14 digs) and Maxwell, who finished with three solo blocks and assisted on four others. Citadel setter Mikaela Tracy dished out 28 assists in the match.
Samford (14-6 Overall/6-0 SoCon)
Match Date: Saturday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
Samford battled against a very tough Elon team on the road Oct. 6, falling in the opening set but rallying for a 3-1 win to stay perfect in SoCon play this season.
Heading into this match, Samford held a 1-4 record this season when losing the first set. The Bulldogs bucked the trend, winning the next three for the four-set victory. The Bulldogs now have a nine-match win streak, dropping only three sets during that stretch.
Yet again, Samford's attack was anchored by its middle blockers with Lauren Hutchinson hitting .407 with 14 kills while Katie Murphy had ten kills of her own on 29 swings. The pair combined for five solo blocks and five assisted blocks as well. Murphy's three solo and three assisted blocks are a season-high and it puts her at 10th all-time at Samford in career solo blocks with 59. Michaela Reesor led all players with 17 kills and added ten digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Chelsi Carter saw the most time at the service line Saturday night, tallying a career-high four service aces.
Elon (8-12, 1-4 SoCon) had three in double-digit kills, led by Megan Gravley with 13, while Ali Deatsch led the defense with 17 digs and Ana Nicksic paced the offense with 42 assists.
