Charleston, S.C. – The men and women's cross country teams will stay in the Charleston area this weekend to compete in an invitational hosted by cross-town rival College of Charleston. The meet will take place at Trophy Lakes on Johns Island, S.C.
The men's 8k race is set to begin at 9 a.m., with the women's 5k race to follow immediately at approximately 9:45 a.m. The race will include eight women's teams and six men's teams including Southern Conference foes College of Charleston, Elon, and Georgia Southern.
The invitational will act as a preview for the 2011 Southern Conference Championships, which will also be hosted by the Cougars and raced on Trophy Lakes' course on Johns Island on Oct. 29.
"We are looking forward to the race tomorrow and a preview of the conference championship course at Trophy Lakes," said Bulldog Head Coach Jody Huddleston.
The Bulldogs opened their season last week in Columbia, S.C., in the Gamecock Invitational where the men finished in second place with an average race time of 16:27, while the women placed fourth with an average time of 21:16.
A minor injury will leave leader Kyle Keene out the race on Saturday giving Bulldog upperclassmen PJ Wasilchak, Atom Young and Austin Waldrop an opportunity to claim the top spot for the men's team. Keene finished last week's meet in third place overall with a 5k time of 15:55.
Sophomore Danielle McKee, who led all Bulldogs last week with a time of 20:19, will lead the charge for the women.
"It's still early and we are not where we need to be right now and will look to improve over the next month. This is the first 8k distance for the men so it will give us a good indication of our fitness level at this point. We will look for the women to improve their 5k times from this past weekend in Columbia. This course is very flat and the USC course was a little more difficult," added Huddleston.
