Coach's Corner: Jack Marchant

CHARLESTON, S.C. – This summer The Citadel Athletic Department is highlighting a number of our coaches in a series titled Coach's Corner. The videos will post each Wednesday morning throughout the summer and are intended to help Bulldog fans and supporters get to know our coaches away from competition. Each Coach's Corner episode features the coach reflecting on his or her background, goals and experiences, in addition to their attraction to The Citadel and coaching our cadet-athletes. Links to previous Coach's Corner posts can be found at the bottom of this article. This week we feature Jack Marchant.

1. Where did you grow up?
I was born in Luton, in a hospital outside Luton, called Dunstable. I lived there until I was five and then moved to Poland through my Dad's business where I lived for four years. Then we moved to Hungary, lived in Budapest for two years, loved it there, and then moved back to just outside Leeds where I went to high school and ended up just before I came over here.

2. How many siblings do you have?
I have two older sisters. The middle sister, she lives in London now and she works in Leicester Square and my other sister lives in Harrogate, just turned 31 and getting married in December.

3. What is your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be going to my grandparents' house, used to go out in the back garden all the time and play, and I threw a rock through their greenhouse window and I blamed it on a ghost. 'Til  this day, I still stick to that story.

4. Who was your favorite athlete as a kid?
My favorite athlete as a kid was a soccer player called Alan Shearer. He played for New Castle and I just loved everyone about him, he scored goals and had a great celebration and was just a great athlete all around.

5. What was your first car?
Oh my first car. It was over here in the States and I was desperate to get one. I was on my way to Cincinnati to get one and I found it had been sold the day before so I ended up buying an Audi A4 that was a heap of junk. I think I had it for two months and then it conked out on me and I sold it for scrap.

6. What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is definitely The Great Escape. It's an old English war movie about prisoners of war in a German camp and all out their escape getting out. It probably has the most iconic movie theme song in Britain.

7. What is the best concert you have ever been to?
My friends are going to kill me for this but the best concert I've probably ever been to is a Maroon 5 concert. I took my wife for Valentine's Day three years ago and I think I talked about it for a month. But hey I liked it.

8. What is your favorite hobby outside of athletics?
I love to play golf. I'm certainly better than Ciaran so that's alright, I'm sure he will beg to differ, but it's definitely me.

9. Tell us about your most memorable vacation:
My most memorable vacation probably would have to be when I had the privilege in high school with my high school cricket team we went to Barbados for 10 days and we raised all the money ourselves. Made some great memories, not only all 10 of us renting jet skis and crashing them but it was a good time. Would love to go back there.

10. Where is a place you would like to visit that you have never been?
Trying to convince my wife to go to Cuba, would love to go there before it gets to commercialized. Other than that, I would love to go to South Africa. My parents have been and loved it so I'd love to go there.

11. What is the best sporting event you've ever attended?
It would have to be the 2008 playoff final which is in the first division of English soccer. We went there with my whole family and we won which meant we got promoted to the Premier league and it's the first time I've ever seen my dad and grandad cry at the same time. Well, that's the first time I've ever seen them cry.

12. What is something on your bucket list you haven't been able to check off yet?
Two things, both similar: skydiving and bungee jumping. And I'm petrified and probably never do them but I'm hoping my wife will go with me so she can push me.

13. What would you consider your greatest athletic achievement?
Playing for the club I supported as a kid was great, unfortunately didn't work out for me but that would have to be my greatest athletic achievement. As well as playing a part of a very good collegiate team through my college career.

14. How did you get into coaching?
When I finished playing I was in the first year of my MBA, didn't particularly want to go out into the real world and I knew the opportunity to play had probably gone past me by then so staying in the game was something I always wanted to do so I decided to start coaching and I've loved it ever since.

15. What attracted you to The Citadel?
Everything, I absolutely love this place. It's got so much going on and I am incredibly proud of the girls and what they go through on a daily basis and what they get out of this place. It would have to be the history and the constant battle that we're up against or people think we are up against to get things done here.

16. What do you enjoy most about the culture at The Citadel?
The comradery between everyone. Everyone goes through the same struggle so to speak and the way that everyone looks out for each other is quite phenomenal.

17. Tell us about your most memorable experience so far at The Citadel:
I've only been here a little over a year and there have been plenty but the two that stick out in my mind have to be the win at home to UNC Asheville in the first game of the season, the emotions that went through that day, especially at the full time whistle and seeing the girls get so emotional having won a game that maybe in years gone by they may not have won was phenomenal and then the win at Wofford has to be up there as well, right up against it, massive game in the conference and we went there and won so it was a great feeling.

18. What's the best part about coaching?
Being involved in the sport I love hands down. I couldn't imagine doing anything else other than this right now and being able to be out on a field in 80 degree weather all year round is brilliant.
