Bulldogs Set Modern-Day Scoring Record with 76-0 Shutout of Webber International

Charleston, S.C. The Citadel set a modern-day Bulldog record by scoring 76 points as they moved to 2-0 with a shutout of Webber International on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hagood Stadium. It is the first 2-0 start for the Bulldogs since 1997 when they went on to finish 6-5.

The previous high mark for the Bulldog offense in the modern era was 64 against Charleston Southern in 2003. The Citadel scored 99 points against Porter Military Academy in 1909. Senior running back Tory Cooper rushed for over 100 yards for the fourth straight game, gaining 113 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Duran Lawson went 12-21 for 220 yards and three touchdowns, with sophomore wide receiver Andre Roberts catching all three of his touchdown passes.

The Bulldogs put up 514 yards of offense, the most for the Cadets since they racked up 562 against Elon last season. The Citadel defense limited the Warriors to only 176 yards of offense and had their first shutout since 2005 against Elon.

The Bulldog offense chewed up the Warrior defense early and often as they jumped on top 28-0 with only five minutes and 50 seconds gone in the game. The Citadel took the opening kickoff 56 yards in three plays, thanks in part to a 29-yard pass from Lawson to Cooper on the first offensive play of the game and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Lawson to Roberts. Senior Mike Adams added the extra-point to put the Cadets up 7-0.

After a three-and-out by Webber International, The Citadel offense went 64 yards in five plays to go up 14-0. Cooper rushed three times for 26 yards on the drive, including a six-yard touchdown run. Adams knocked the extra-point through with 10:49 still left in the first quarter.

Roberts gave the Bulldogs great field position at the Warrior six-yard line with a 51-yard punt return after another three-and-out forced by The Citadel defense. Lawson ran it into the endzone on the first play of the drive, and Adams added the point after for a 21-0 lead.

Another electrifying return by Roberts, this time for 28 yards, put the Cadets at the Webber International 28-yard line for their fourth offensive possession. Just like the previous three, the Bulldogs punched it into the endzone. Lawson found Roberts from 15 yards out on the second play of the drive, and Adams knocked in the extra-point for a commanding 28-0 advantage with 8:10 still remaining in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs added to their cushion on another connection between Lawson and Roberts. The 47-yard pass and the extra-point by Adams made it 35-0 with 11:09 left in the second quarter.

A field goal by Adams from 35 yards out made it 38-0, and The Citadel added on more score before halftime on an 11-play, 72-yard drive. Cooper capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run with 3:09 left in the half. Adams knocked in the point after to give the Cadets their halftime advantage at 38-0.

The second half was more of the same for The Citadel as they put 31 more points on the board. A 34-yard field goal by Adams with 5:26 left in the third quarter gave the Bulldogs a 48-0 lead, and sophomore linebacker Carver Wright scooped up a fumble by Warrior quarterback Cory Johns and returned it six yards for a touchdown. The fumble return for a touchdown was the first by The Citadel since 2005 against Florida State. Adams made the extra-point for a 55-0 Cadet lead.

The Bulldog defense scored another touchdown on an interception by sophomore cornerback Ryan Jones as he returned the Johns' pass 18 yards for the score. It marked the first time The Citadel defense returned an interception for at touchdown since 2005 against Ole Miss. Adams hit the point after once again for a 62-0 lead.

The Cadets added two more touchdowns in the final quarter for the most points by a Bulldog squad in the modern era. Freshman running back Cody Wilson scored from nine-yards out for his first career touchdown with 14:53 remaining in the contest, and freshman defensive back Mel Capers blocked a Travis Tubbs punt and recovered in the end zone for their 10th touchdown of the game. It was the third blocked punt of the game by the Cadets and the first time The Citadel has scored off a blocked punt since 1997 against Western Carolina. Adams hit both extra-points to give the Bulldogs their final margin of victory at 76-0.

The Bulldogs will go on the road for the first time this season next week as they travel to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 910 The Team, and can be heard live through Bulldog Insider at CitadelSports.com.
