Â
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's and women's track and field teams racked up 10 combined individual event wins at the Holy City Relays in Mount Pleasant on Saturday. The one-day meet took place at the Peyton Johnson Moore Track & Field Complex and featured Wofford, South Carolina State and Savannah State, among other programs.Â
Â
Sophomore Mady Riegel led the strong collective effort from the Bulldogs by resetting her own program record in the javelin competition. Her best toss traveled 133 feet and 2.75 inches to top the field at the Holy City Relays and edge her previous personal record of 131 feet, 10 inches. Freshman Kameron Cass secured a 1-2 finish for The Citadel women in the javelin event by taking second with a personal record heave of 114 feet, 2.25 inches.
Â
Freshman Charlie Hatler later made it a Bulldog javelin sweep by winning the men's competition. His throw of 160 feet, 7.5 inches was the second-best heave of his career.
Â
The Citadel won three other field events. Junior Mitchell Noel cleared 6 feet, 2 inches on his first attempt to clinch an event title in the high jump for the second consecutive week while sophomore Derrick Freeland won the discus throw with a personal-record toss of 149 feet, 2.75 inches, which is now the 10th-best throw in program history. Freshman Ja'Lon Williams followed in fourth place in that event with a personal-record heave of 146 feet, 1 inch.
Â
Freeland later took fifth overall in the hammer throw, reaching 155 feet, .50 inches. Fellow Bulldog Michael Fernandez placed sixth overall with a personal-record toss that traveled 152 feet, 11.75 inches. The Citadel's final field-event win came when junior Kaitlyn Moore took top honors in the shot put by totaling 39 feet, 7.25 inches, which now ranks fourth all-time in program history.
The Bulldogs also collected five event victories in running competitions, fueled by strong performances from The Citadel's distance runners and relay squads. Seniors Jessica DeWitte and Caillian Colquitt each picked up a win on Saturday. DeWitte bested the field in the 1500-meter run, clocking a 4:54.66. Colquitt followed in second with a 4:57.06 and later won the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:42.94, less than two seconds shy of the school record.
Â
On the men's side, sophomores Michael Lantz and Jamie Cunningham finished first and second in the 3000-meter event. Lantz clocked a 9:06.01 while Cunningham recorded a time of 9:09.55. The Citadel's last two event titles came when the Bulldogs swept both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays with times of 42.61 and 50.25, respectively.
Â
Other notable performances from The Citadel on Saturday included a pair of personal records in the 800-meter run by Stephan Kulick and Jerod Lacy. Kulick took second with a 1:56.27 and Lacy placed fourth with a 1:59.13.
