Long Wins Air Rifle At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Citadel rifle team was led by junior Morgan Long on Saturday in the 2016-17 season-opening match at VMI.
VMI's men won the team competition with 4,479 points and was followed closely by The Citadel's co-ed team that totaled 4,459 points. The Keydet women placed third with 4,423 points and the Bulldog women scored 4,139 points.
"We made a good attempt but had a couple shoot below their average along with a couple of bad choices by me and that allowed VMI to keep the flag," head coach William Smith said. "There were some bright spots with improvements in smallbore and several shooting their first match. Even with the loss, this is a strong start to a long season before the championships in March. Next week we face powerhouse TCU at home, so we plan to step it up a couple of notches."
Long provided the top individual performance for the Bulldogs by scoring 577 points in air rifle to claim the victory by five points and leading The Citadel with 556 points in smallbore for a second-place finish. Freshman Alexander McAlear scored 568 points in air rifle to place sixth and finished 12th in smallbore with 541 points in his first collegiate competition. Senior Richie Parra and junior Colton Poole rounded out the top 10 in air rifle by finishing ninth and 10th, respectively, with scores of 565 and 563 points. Poole also finished seventh in smallbore with 548 points.
Sophomore Allison Auten registered a top-five finish by scoring 550 points to take fifth in smallbore and also scored 559 points for a 12th-place finish in air rifle. Senior Patrick Meyer and sophomore Tommy Simrill finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in smallbore, and Simrill also finished 17th in air rifle with Meyer taking 21st. Sophomores Leah Wallace and Brandi Duzz both scored 547 points in air rifle. Wallace added a score of 519 in smallbore and Duzz scored 514. Faith Totherow and Carli Cline made their Bulldog debuts, with Totherow scoring 516 in smallbore and 503 in air rifle and Cline scoring 501 in air rifle and 492 in smallbore.
The Citadel returns to Charleston for its home opener next week when it hosts TCU. Admission to the match at the Inouye Marksmanship Center is free, and live stats will be available at CitadelSports.com.
