MEET RESULTS
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel cross country teams defended their home course well with the men's and women's teams both taking second place at the 36th annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational on Saturday morning at the James Island County Park.
Michael Lantz led the men's team in 8K, placing second individually in a time of 26:51.82. Caillian Colquitt paced the women's team with her best 5K time of the season in 19:27.63, taking fourth place.
"I thought the men performed really well in their first 8K of the season," said head coach Jody Huddleston. "The women's team did a great job especially without two of our top three runners. We had a couple of freshmen step up and really improve. We are excited to continue practicing this week and look forward to USC Upstate next Saturday."
Despite missing two runners from the women's team, the Bulldogs received breakout performances from freshmen Jordan Neeley and Daniela Sanchez-Martinez. Neeley beat her personal best in the 5K by more than a minute, placing 10th in 20:39.74. Sanchez-Martinez took 14th for The Citadel, also setting a new personal best in 20:51.70.
Bethany Reeves and Emani Little rounded out the women's scorers, placing 18th and 19th. As a team, the women finished with 65 points, 40 better than third place Charleston Southern. Wofford finished in first with 23 points.
Ross Jordan helped the Bulldogs secure a second place finish, placing fourth in his third consecutive race in 27:33.01. Jamie Cunningham finished in the top-10, placing eighth in 27:49.37. Freshmen Eric Avalos and Brian Cothran rounded out the top-five for the Bulldogs, taking 16th and 18th individually.
The Bulldogs finished with 48 points, just 12 back of SoCon rival Wofford who took first place. Francis Marion placed third, while Dessie Demlew of Benedict College placed first individually.
The Citadel returns to action next Saturday at the USC Upstate Invitational.
