The Citadel Wins Back Flag From VMI

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team finished third overall behind two ranked teams and defeated SoCon foes VMI and Wofford on Saturday inside the Inouye Marksmanship Center.
Fourth-ranked Air Force won the match with 4,767 points, and No. 20 North Georgia placed second with 4,547 points to narrowly hold off the third-place Bulldogs' season-high-tying total of 4,518 points. VMI's men's team was fourth with 4,488 points, with the Keydet women's 4,408 points placing fifth. Wofford scored 4,292 to take sixth, and The Citadel women placed seventh with 4,263 points.
By defeating VMI, The Citadel co-ed team claimed back the flags that go to the winner of each head-to-head competition between the military school rivals. In each rifle competition featuring The Citadel and VMI, the highest-placing team earns the opponent's flag and keeps it in their possession until the next meeting.
Sophomore Allison Auten led the Bulldogs with her seventh-place finish in air rifle. Her score of 578 was followed closely by junior Colton Poole's 576 points that placed eighth. Junior Morgan Long's season-best smallbore score of 563 was good for seventh and made him the highest-placing Bulldog in that discipline. Long scored 572 in air rifle to take 13th, and junior Matthew Davenport finished 16th with 569 points.
Freshman Alexander McAlear posted a season-high 559 points and finished 11th in smallbore. Senior Patrick Meyer and Davenport also registered season-best smallbore scores of 552 and 542, respectively. Poole added another top-20 finish in smallbore with his 554 points that placed 19th.
The women's team was led by Leah Fenwrick-Wallace, who scored a season-high 570 and finished 15th in air rifle. The sophomore from Greensboro, North Carolina, also had the team's highest smallbore score of 521 points.
Junior Carli Cline scored 548 in air rifle and 519 in smallbore, and freshman Faith Totherow recorded scores of 530 in air rifle and 516 in smallbore. Sophomore Shay Littlejohn posted 547 in air rifle and 512 in smallbore, while junior Raven Wills scored 526 in air rifle and 505 in smallbore.
The Citadel's weekend competition continues Sunday with a dual against Air Force. Action begins inside the Inouye Marksmanship Center at 7:45 a.m., and live results will be available at CitadelSports.com.
