Wofford Handles The Citadel, 69-54

January 13, 2002

Senior guard Mike Lenzly scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds to help Wofford handle The Citadel, 69-54, in Southern Conference basketball action Monday evening in McAlister Field House.

"We showed great toughness tonight on both ends of the court," Wofford head coach Mike Young stated. "Our shot selection, rebounds and our zone defense were all key ingredients for our victory tonight."

Young was right as his team shot 43 percent on the evening and held The Citadel to a miserable 31.4 percent shooting. Senior forward Lee Nixon, freshman forward Howard Wilkerson and freshman center Tyler Berg joined Lenzly in double figure scoring on the evening.

"We just didn't execute at all tonight," Citadel head coach Pat Dennis stated. "This is our most disappointing loss of the season and we are definitely going to have to get better after this game."

The Citadel turned the ball over 19 times and connected on just four-of-23 three-point attempts. Junior forward Max Mombollet and Senior center Gregg Jones were the lone bright spots for the Bulldogs on the evening. Mombollet posted a game-high 19 points and collected seven rebounds, while Jones scored nine points and pulled down nine boards.

"We shot too many threes tonight," Dennis added. "We need to get the ball inside more. I feel that Max and Gregg are very strong post players that will help us win some ball games."

With the victory Wofford improves to 6-7, 2-1 in the SoCon, while The Citadel fall to 5-9, 0-3 in SoCon. Citadel freshman point guard Kevin Hammack added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Citadel's next game will be on Saturday, January 18th at 1:00 pm, while Wofford will return to Charleston to take on the College of Charleston on the same day at 6:00 pm.
