The Appalachian State University women's soccer team made it two victories in a row by defeating The CItadel Bulldogs 3-0 at Kidd Brewer Stadium Friday night. The victory was also marked the second conference win for the Mountaineers, taking them to 2-4 in the conference, and 4-9 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 4-7-1 on the year, 0-6 in the conference.
The first half was marked by a 15-0 shot attempt blow out by the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers connected on their first goal at the 12:12 mark, as junior forward Alana Parrett (Kingston, Ontario) sent the ball to teammate Ansley Dunn (Erie, Pa.), who was at the 15 yard line. Dunn took a look at the goal, and sent the ball flying into the right corner of the goal. The Bulldogs Martha Skinner never had a shot at the ball. The Mountaineers saw several good looks at the goal late in the half, as they shot three corner kicks in the last three minutes of the half. They were finally able to connect with under a minute remaining in the half as sophomore Abby Atwell (Winston-Salem, N.C.) passed the ball straight into the path of freshman Whitney Southard (Brentwood, Tenn.), who then scored. The goal, the second on the year for Southard, put the Mountaineers up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Mountaineers dominated the second half. The half was all offense for Appalachian, as the Bulldogs looked to get on the board. They had one shot, midway through the second half, but to no avail. As the clock was winding down, the Mountaineers sealed the game at the 88:19 mark. Sophomore Jennifer Rudy (Etiwanda, Calif.) notched her fifth assist of the season as she crossed the ball to teammate Jennipher Martin (Belmont, N.C), who was inside the ten yard line. Martin then headed the ball off of the cross right into the goal. Martin's second goal of the season made the final score 3-0.
Appalachian's keeper Breland Meany (Hoover, Ala.) recorded only one save on the night, coming from The Citadels only shot on the evening. The Citadel's Martha Skinner nothched five saves on the night. The Mountaineers had eight corner kicks, compared to The Citadel's two.
