The Citadel Dominates Coker, 6-0

October 8, 2002

Sophomore forward Kelly Pesterfield scored a hat-trick to propel The Citadel to a dominating 6-0 win over Coker College in intercollegiate women's soccer action on Stoney Field.

The Citadel (4-6-1) started the scoring at the 5:13 mark in the first half as Pesterfield chipped in a pass from freshman forward Sydney LaQuey from 15 yards out. Freshman midfielder Julie Austin added her first goal at 9:24 in the first as she scored unassisted from inside 10-yards. Her second goal came less than one minute later at 10:27 as Austin broke away from Coker's defenders and scored from 12 yards out. Pesterfield added her second goal of the game as Austin placed a crossing pass across the middle that Pesterfield blistered past the goalie.

The Bulldogs added another at 26:32 in the second half as Shauna Hartman blasted a curving shot from 30-yards over the head of Coker's goalie. Pesterfield added her third goal at the 13:02 remaining in the second half off of a nice crossing pass by freshman Lauren Merchant. The final goal came on a breakaway setup by Merchant that junior midfielder Rose Rodriguez drilled home for the seventh and final goal.

The Citadel returns to action on Friday afternoon as they travel to take on Southern Conference foe Appalachian State in Boone, NC.
