The Citadel Dominates Oglethorpe, 95-55

December 9, 2002

Senior forward Ben Tobias scored a career-high 18 points and added four rebounds to help The Citadel dominate Oglethorpe, 95-55, in collegiate basketball action Monday night in McAlister Field House.

"Ben played very smart tonight on both ends of the court," Citadel coach Pat Dennis stated. "He not only did a good job on defense but he was lights out with his shooting all night."

Tobias connected on eight-of-nine field goals and was two-for-two from behind the three-point arch. Tobias was joined in double figures by forward Romas Krywonis (15), guard Dante Terry (14), forward Max Mombollet (12) and forward Michael Joseph (10). Krywonis recorded his first double-double of the season as he pulled down 10 boards to go along with his 15 points. Terry's 14 points marks the second straight game in which he topped his career-high in scoring.

"We did a good job getting everyone involved tonight and spreading the ball around," Dennis added. "This experience is going to help us as we are looking ahead to the rigors of the Southern Conference schedule."

Dennis was right as 11 Bulldogs scored and as a team they totaled 23 assists on the night. Leading the way in distributing the offense was freshman point guard Kevin Hammack who posted eight points and a career-high nine assists.

"Our defense was solid and created 24 turnovers," Dennis continued. "The pressure we put on our opponent's offense really helps to generate our offense on the other end as we cause a lot of turnovers and fast break opportunities."

The Citadel capitalized on the large number of turnovers by scoring 30 points on the 24 take-away opportunities. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 59.1-percent from the field and marked the second consecutive game that they have shot over 50 percent. With the victory The Citadel improves to 3-3 on the season while the Stormy Petrels fall to 1-4.

The Citadel breaks for exams over the next week and does not play again until December 18th when the Bulldogs take on Southwestern at 7:15 pm in McAlister Field House.
